5 th DataGrid Project Conference, - Piliscsaba, HUNGARY, 1-5 September Tomorrow’s future, Today’s Reality - Grids deployment in Europe - Kyriakos Baxevanidis, European Commission, DG INFSO

Grids: a broader role in eEconomy! Will the organization disappear? Smart organizations (driven by knowledge, value of collective intelligence) Fuzzy Management, Flat Hierarchy Collaborative Partnerships; Virtual Organizations; free flow of ideas, information; key role of Relationships) Sharing of Resources Intangible assets (SW, content, information, brands etc) Networked structure Evolution trends of the Organization in eEconomy GRIDS: A NEW UTILITY?

Today’s Reality Unprecedented degree of co-operation on technology level between key user communities - User communities is a European strength! - First pilot test-beds across Europe - significant middle- ware developments in the EU - international links - collaboration with GEANT Link to and integration of National Grid-Programmes Towards more European consensus at GGF 19 IST-funded projects, 50m funding

Tomorrow’s future A new class of Grid-based infrastructure across Europe A new generation of services over the Internet - variety of implementations, interoperable solutions (open systems, open architectures) -...with Europe always at the frontline of technology development, use Time horizon the end of the 6 th Framework Programme? World scale collaborations, access to “infinite” information power, new ways to share and create knowledge to be new key facilities

Some important FP6 priorities Create RTD-efforts to reach high level and ambitious objectives - mobilize National, private funds From prototype to production level test-beds (industrial quality); promote commercial uptake of technology Promote new concepts (Mobile Grids, Semantic Grids, Grids and the Web, Ambient Intelligence Spaces) Strengthen middle-ware developments in Europe (Academia-Industry collaboration, skills) Involve new User/Application communities Strengthen International role of Europe - impact to standards; €300m for Geant & Grid Test-beds in FP6

A rich role for everyone Project level work Clustering, cross-project teams (GRIDSTART) Cross-fertilization of Knowledge, creation of new Knowledge Feedback and orientations to Research work National-, International-Cooperation, GGF etc

A co-operative competition environment... Think big - critical mass! (FP6 integrated projects…) Open organization structures, free flow of ideas! Dynamically link up on individual/project level - create new knowledge! (FP6 Networks of Excellence, Support Actions…)
