COST Actions: 283 - Computational and Information Infrastructure in the Astronomical DataGrid 282 - Knowledge Exploration in Science and Technology

Current Grid test-beds Most of the projects include test-beds, which bring Grid technology from the laboratory into the real world Several application areas – high energy physics, asytrophysics, quantum chemistry and drug design, earth and environment, biology, medicine, risk management, computational fluid dynamics, industrial simulations, etc.

Create a pan- European Grid empowered research e-infrastructure We have a political decision to implement and the responsibility to use the budget in the most effective and optimal way

Global knowledge infrastructure Relate to policies:  it is one of the major ways to implement the European Research Area  will change the way science is done in Europe  powerful instrument for international cooperation  enhance social and geographic cohesion Deploy Grid empowered infrastructure which serves the research communities in all scientific disciplines: e-science

General objectives:  Use of the GEANT network as the main underlying connectivity platform  Coordinate and integrate when possible the GEANT and Grid efforts  Work in collaboration with user communities in order to build a bridge between research networking and Grid technology on one hand and scientific application areas on the other hand

Priorities:  The second stage of GEANT  From Grid test-beds to production quality Grid research infrastructure gigabit/terabit scales (in terms of computing, storage and communication power)  Support the creation of national Grid infrastructures and integrate them on EU level  Build up on the scientific and technological know-how acquired in FP5, FP6 and in the world in general. Experiment with new technologies, adopt and implement them as soon as possible

Objectives: Expand Grids to new application areas identify as many as possible user communities specify their requirements make predictions for the evolution in time of these requirements identify the synergies between different communities describe their geographical coverage and expansion Grid-empowered e-infrastructure that serves the concrete and actual needs of researchers: user communities

Do not exist well defined national institutions for Grids responsible for deploying national infrastructures (similar to NRENs) Do not exist established funding schemes which are appropriate to the high level of integration and cooperation that the widespread of Grid technology imposes The technology is not mature enough Currently industrial entities are not ready to take the high risk of investment in Grids We turn to the research community in Europe: knowledgeable, creative, innovative, open to change, internationally oriented, strong community identity... Challenges for Grids in the context of Research Infrastructures

Thank you for your attention
