Eastern Water Dragon Alex Mulet

Classification 1 There are five different groups of animals with vertebrates.  Mammals  Fish  Reptiles  Birds  Amphibians

Classification 2  The Eastern Water Dragon is classified as a reptile because it’s cold blooded.  The Eastern Water Dragon has scales.  The Eastern Water Dragon also lungs.

Eastern Water Dragon  The Eastern Water Dragon is classified as a reptile because they lay eggs.  They have loose folds of skin under their mouth.  Their legs are long and very strong.  The tail is strong and flattened on the sides to help with swimming.

Adaptation - Camouflage  Since the Eastern Water Dragon is prey, it has to camouflage itself.  Its upper body is gray-green so it can hide itself in bushes.  The eyes of the Water Dragon are shaped like berries – ooh, so cool!  The folds of skin on its neck look like leaves!

Adaptation – Habitat  The Eastern Water Dragon is found along the east coast of Australia.  It is normally found around creeks, rivers, or lakes.  This lizard likes to sit on branches overhanging over the water. If it is disturbed it just jumps in the water from the branch.

Behavior- Social Habits 1  It feeds on some bugs, frogs and fruits.  Males make homes that protect the eggs.  The females lay about a dozen eggs in a hole.  Males sometimes fight for territories.

Behavior- Social Habits 2  In the wild, the Water Dragon usually live in wooded or bushy places.  The females dig holes in sandy banks to lay their eggs.  Baby Eastern Water Dragons are able to fight for themselves almost as soon as they’re born.

Interesting Facts  They have big, large heads and large, compressed bodies and tails.  There is a row of spines starting on the back of their head and leading down along their back-cool!  The lizard can stay underwater for up to 30 minutes and rise to the surface, where it can breathe while checking the area for danger before going back on land.

Ending Pictures Cool huh?
