Are uniforms in schools a good idea?  Background The question of whether children should wear a uniform to school always makes for a lively debate, and not only among students! In some countries school uniform is normal and most schools make their students wear one.

Persuasive Writing seeks to convince its readers to understand and agree with the point-of-view presented by appealing to the audience’s reason and emotion.

Things to do in a persuasive essay INTRODUCTION & THESIS Clearly define a significant problem, issue, topic, or concern; Make a assertion or judgment, or propose solutions; BODY PARAGRAPHS Support thesis by using research, logic, descriptions, illustrations, examples from experience, anecdotes addressing the reader’s potential doubts and criticisms CONCLUSION Restate the topic (your opinion) in a strong, positive way Avoid using “you” when addressing the the reader - just sounds preachy!

Ways to develop persuasive body paragraphs Understand your audience Use effective language & voice of conviction Support your opinion Know the various sides of your issue Defend your opinion & counter the other’s side’s argument Establish your credibility Use credible sources Use facts, statistics, personal anecdotes

Thesis (also known as claim) – states the main point or stance for the argument

Research – credible information (quotes, graphs, tables, illustrations) that make the argument more convincing

Logos – uses logic, statistics, or facts to support the argument

Ethos - the ethical appeal based on the character, credibility, or reliability of the writer

Pathos - the emotional appeal to an audience's needs, values, and emotional sensibilities
