Year 9 Options in Vocational Education We achieved the most outstanding results in the school.

What are BTEC’s What is BTEC? It is more practical, more case study and research based. There is an on line or paper based test with re-sit opportunities. It has the following equivalent grades: Distinction* = A*grade GCSE Distinction = A grade GCSE Merit = B grade GCSE Pass = C grade GCSE

Health & Social Care – BTEC First Award in Health and Social care Single = 1 GCSE equivalents 3 periods a week

What is it about?: Communication Learning how to break down communication How do you communicate with someone who has impaired hearing. Learn how to overcome those barriers

How is the course organised? All units except one are coursework based There is a paper based assessment during the course – there are opportunities to resit. Coursework is assessed by your tutors and then checked by the exam board.

What do past students say? I really enjoyed the course, it was fun and we discussed a lot of stuff I can’t talk about with other people. I understand about myself better The course made me decide to look at Social work so that is what I will be doing at University later

Level 2 First Award in Children’s Play, Learning and Development

What will you learn? Patterns of Child Development 0- 7 years Teaching children through play How children develop socially and emotionally Looking at the key people who influence them from 0 – 7years Equal opportunities during child development.

How do you learn? Through play, lots of creative activities, watching clips of children playing, going to nurseries and watching children play. Visit to virtual baby centre.

Progression at 6 th form Level 3 course which will give you a professional qualification to work within the Child care profession. Possible careers; Nursery nurse/manager Attracts points to go to University and follow the career of your choice.

What do past students say Ask year 9 – they love their lessons and even turn up early or at lunch time to do extra.!!!! If you love children this is the course for you ☺

Business Do you want to be your own boss? You will simulate the setting up of a small business as part of your course. What business does Teignmouth lack – could you be the next Lord Sugar/Deborah Meaden?

Business How is the course organised? 3 periods per week 75% coursework with a short on-line test during the course Progression route on to a Level 3 Business qualification

Business BTEC Business – what is it about? Currently doing recruitment and job interviews and searching for courses that might interest students. Next month we are talking about branding and why we buy brands and study how they make us buy expensive products.

What did past/current students say? I am studying Business at Bristol – I was the only student who came here understanding Economics!! 50% of students who did business at GCSE level are doing it in the 6 th form. The students all pick a business that they want to start and begin the process. They like finding out about China and how businesses work in different parts of the world.

Hair & Beauty Studies Level 2 Certificate Are you interested in working in the hair and beauty sector? Learn about presenting a professional image, styling hair, shampooing and conditioning, applying make-up and nail art

Level 2 City & Guilds This qualification teaches you how to style hair, care for hair, we have a properly equipped salon so you wash hair, blow dry it and style it in the lesson. You are also learning about make-up and nails. Excellent hairdressers can earn £31,000 per year.

Introduction to the Hair and Beauty Sector – – one GCSE at grade A - C (6 periods double option) Progression You can then go on to study here at TCS/ College or get an apprenticeship.
