5  The health and social care industry is far- reaching. It is a sector that will impact on everyone in society at some point in their life.  The UK health sector employs about 2 million people across a range of organisations.  The UK care sector employs another 1.6 million people, across care for adults and children.

6 There are many aspects to the care industry including:  services for children, young people and families  social care  health care  day services  health work  domiciliary care  social work  residential care  mental health services

7  New course which began June 2006  Eight units covered during year 10 and year 11  No written exams  All units are assessed via coursework  Opportunity to revisit and improve each piece of coursework

8  The diploma is equivalent to FOUR GCSE grades A* - C  The marks from each of the eight units make up the total grade

9 The marks for each unit are allocated  PASS - equivalent to GCSE grade C  MERIT – equivalent to GCSE grade B  DISTINCTION – equivalent to GCSE grade A  DISTINCTION * - equivalent to GCSE grade A*

10 The course is delivered using a range of vocational learning approaches, for example:  Discussions and debates  Watching past episodes of medical dramas – to use as case studies  Outside speakers  Presentations of researched topics  Lively question and answer sessions  Role play  Trips

11 Course Structure 8 Units delivered over two years

12  You learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations for example  Registered care home  Hospital  Nursing home  Health centre

13 HEALTH SOCIAL CARE diet exercise relationships warmth

14 Biology  How many life stages are there?  What are the needs of individuals?  Which factors help to influence individuals’ health?  How are people similar and different?

15 Nutrition  Dietary needs at different life stages  The effects of unbalanced diets  Dietary needs of patients  Food safety and hygiene

16 Law and Social Policy  How do care workers promote the rights of individuals?  What are the potential hazards within health and social care environments?  Health and safety legislation and guidelines

17 Ethics  What prejudices exist in society?  What legislations are in place to protect individuals from discrimination?  How do health and social care services promote equality of opportunity?

18 Social and educational activities  Creative and therapeutic activities  The benefits of these activities for individuals  Health and safety legislation, regulations and codes of practice

19 It is a requirement of the course that students conduct their year 10 work experience in a health or social care setting.

20  The application process  Work experience  The use of interpersonal skills  Describing a period of work experience
