LOS MANDATOS FORMALES Formal Commands

Spanish Formal Commands - Los Mandatos Formales Have you heard any expressions lately with the word “VIVA? ¡Viva Las Vegas! ¡Viva México! ¡Viva la Revolución!

These expressions use the formal command, the one used for Ud., or people you are showing respect for by using the formal tense. It is also used for generic proclamations where you are enthusiastically telling the world you want something to happen!

Las terminaciones (endings)

USTEDES…. The tense used for “you all” also follows a similar pattern. To make a negative command for these tenses, just add the word “NO” before it. As you see the patterns for Uds. or "you all" are similar, just add an "N" at the end of the word.

EJEMPLOS! (andar) ande walk! (estudiar) estudie study! (llamar) llame call! (comer) coma eat! (romper) rompa break! (ver) vea see! (subir) suba go up! (escribir) escriba write!

¿Cómo se forma? YO! Take the YO form of the verb! Ejemplo: Yo tomo el sol. tomo comes from TOMAR Since it is an –AR verb, change the -0 ending to an opposite ending….or an –ER ending… TOME Now I can tell my boss…. ¡TOME EL SOL!

So Why the YO form instead of the él or ella forms? Logically, it makes sense to state: OH, JUST CHANGE THE endings of the él, ella, and usted forms to the OPPOSITE verb endings… Él habla……..now I want YOU (polite) to speak……HABLE HOWEVER……

Doesn’t work with…. It doesn’t work with IRREGULAR verbs… Ella dice (from decir=to say or tell) does NOT become: DICA (to tell someone politely to tell)….. Take the YO form = DIGO and change that IRREGULAR form to: DIGA….. NOW We’re talking!

¡Más EJEMPLOS!Ud. command YO: DIGO¡DIGA! YO: HAGO¡HAGA! YO: TENGO¡TENGA! YO: VENGO¡VENGA! YO: SALGO¡SALGA! YO: OIGO¡OIGA! YO: VEO¡VEA! YO: VOY (un poco diferente) ¡VAYA! YO: DOY (un poco diferente) ¡DÉ!

AND STEM CHANGING VERBS? YO: ENTIENDOUD. ENTIENDA YO: CIERROUD. CIERRA YO: MIENTOUD. MIENTA TALKING TO SOMEONE IN THE FORMAL WAY!!! Meaning: I understand……UNDERSTAND! I close CLOSE! I lieLIE!

Dormir, Volver, Encontrar….. YO: DUERMO¡DUERMA! YO: VUELVO¡VUELVA! YO: ENCUENTRO¡ENCUENTRA! Meaning:Talking politely…. I SLEEPSLEEP! I RETURNRETURN! I FINDFIND!

What about telling a lot of people to do something? SIMPLEMENTE AGREGAN UNA ¨N¨ … HABLE  HABLEN COMA  COMAN VIVA  VIVAN

Más EJEMPLOS….. YO: DIGO¡DIGA!DIGAN YO: HAGO¡HAGA!HAGAN YO: TENGO¡TENGA!TENGAN YO: VENGO¡VENGA!VENGAN YO: SALGO¡SALGA!SALGAN YO: OIGO¡OIGA!OIGAN YO: VEO¡VEA!VEAN YO: VOY ¡VAYA!VAYAN YO: DOY ¡DÉ!DEN

Mandatos Formales To summarize….. CHANGE THE YO FORMS USE THE OPPOSITE ENDINGS…If the verb is AR …USE ER/IR endings …If the verb is ER/IR…use the AR endings ADD and N to the new command to make it plural

Mandatos Formales Now you are either telling one person in a polite way to do something….or telling two or more people to do something…. ESTUDIE UD. LOS VERBOS. ESTUDIEN TODOS PARA EL EXAMEN.

YOUR TASK….. You will choose 10 people in the class….You will advise them as to what to do…BUT in SPANISH! Use the FORMAL COMMANDS!!! BE CREATIVE & CONSTRUCTIVE EJEMPLO> Alicia: ¡Baile salsa delante de la clase porque sabes bailar!
