English Composition Tips for Success Prof. Maria Schofer

Make the Most of Class Come to class regularly. Make attendance a priority. Come prepared with assignments done, both reading or writing. Engage in class discussion. Make an impression on both your classmates and your professor. Remember to bring your flash drive to save your work, but also save your work elsewhere (such as in your inbox).

College Etiquette Respect each other’s opinions in both your comments and facial expressions/body language. Side-bar conversations are not appropriate. Use your computer only for class assignments. Facebooking, texting or other distractions should not be done in class. Please make sure to turn any electronic devices to silent operation. Discussing grades is not considered appropriate in a public venue.

Outside of Class Read any assignments well in advance. Think about your readings analytically. Write the rough draft and take time to revise for the final draft. Revision is not simply correcting the grammar. Figure out what makes one essay “superior” over another. This comes through reading many examples, including student essays. Connect with a classmate. If you must be absent get notes from, or send in assignments through, the classmate.

Outside of Class Stay connected by visiting my blog and registering to get updates: Then click on the appropriate class. You are welcome to me at any time with pertinent questions. I’m here to help you succeed in class! Office hours are when I’ll be in the adjunct office, but you can make an appointment, too. Get tutoring if you need help.

In Class Activity Get together with one other person in this class. Spend five minutes speaking with your partner, introducing yourselves to one another. Introduce your new acquaintance to the class.
