Mononucleosis A.K.A The Kissing Disease B.K.A Mono

Symptoms Most frequent symptoms: –Drowsiness –Fever –General discomfort, uneasiness, or ill feeling –Loss of appetite –Muscle aches of stiffness –Rash –Sore throat –Swollen lymph nodes –Swollen spleen Least frequent symptoms: –Chest pain –Cough –Fatigue –Headache –Hives –Jaundice (skin gets yellow) –Neck stiffness –Nose bleed –Rapid heart rate –Sensitivity to light –Shortness of breath

How do it spread? By salvia Close contact Mono is communicable because if you come in close contact with someone you are most likely to catch it.

How you know if you got it? During physical examination doctors may find swollen lymph nodes in your neck ( located in the front or the back of the neck) Swollen tonsils with whitish-yellow stuff on it If swollen spleen or liver is found well doctor is pushing your stomach

How do I know if I got it? continued If there is a skin rash If you have a high count of white blood cells Unnatural looking white blood cells called atypical lymphocytes If the monospot test is postive

Treatment Drink plenty of fluids Gargle with warm salt water to ease a sore throat Get plenty of rest Take acetaminophen or ibuprofen for pain and fever You should also avoid contact sports while the spleen is swollen (to prevent it from bursting)

Preventions Avoid kissing or sharing utensils if you or someone close to you has mono. Mono is communicable because if you come in close contact with someone you are most likely to catch it.

Possible complications Death in persons with weakened immune systems Hemolytic anemia Hepatitis with jaundice Inflammation of the testicles Secondary bacterial throat infection Bursting of the slpeen (avoid pressure to the spleen)

Neurological complications (rare) Guillain-Barre syndrome Meningitis seizures Temporary facial paralysis (Bell’s palsy) Uncoordinated movements (ataxia)

The fever usually drops in 10 days swollen lymph glands and spleen heal in 4 weeks Fatigue usually goes away within a few weeks but may linger for 2 to 3 month

When a Medical Professional is needed Abdominal pain Breathing difficulty Persistent high fevers (more than 101.5°F) Severe headache Severe sore throat or swollen tonsils Weakness in the arm or legs Yellow discoloration of your eyes or skin Sharp, sudden, severe abdominal pain Significant difficulty swallowing or breathing Stiff neck or severe weakness
