Common Cold
Viral infection
Effects nose and throat
Usually clears up within 7 days
No cure

3. Respiratory Infections
Influenza
Viral infection
Chills, fever, body aches, weakness
Pneumonia- a serious infections of the lungs

4. Respiratory Infections
Tuberculosis
Highly contagious bacterial infection that affects the lungs
Coughing, chest pain, fever, shortness of breath
Can be treated with antibiotics

5. Respiratory Infection
Strep Throat
Bacterial infection of the throat
Sore throat, fever, and swelling of the throat
Can be treated with antibiotics

6. Diseases of the Nervous System
Encephalitis – viral infection of the brain
Meningitis – viral infection of the membranes that cover the brain and spinal cord
Poliomyelitis – viral infection of the central nervous

7. Mononucleosis Viral Infection Common among teens
Chills, fever, soar throat, fatigue
Known as “kissing disease”
Bed rest is treatment

8. Hepatitis – infection of the liver (viral)
Jaundice, fever, loss of appetite, nausea, body aches and pains
Hepatitis A – contaminated food or drink
Hepatitis B & C – infected blood
