“Out of Date” – The Philadelphia Inquirer, November 16, 2003 Assignment review….

If dating is dead, what is taking its place, according to this article? Group Dating Group Dating –“People just go out in groups,” said 19 year old University of Penn student, Jonathan Meyer. “You just go out… and see what happens.” –Hanging with the herd: mingling until 2 – 4 am when they either go home alone or with the group OR “hook-up” with a third party.

#2. Why are researchers worried about the “lack of emotional intimacy?” Worried because these young adults are NOT risking the emotional intimacy of a one-on-one relationship where they begin to know what they really value and what they will look for in a life partner. Worried because these young adults are NOT risking the emotional intimacy of a one-on-one relationship where they begin to know what they really value and what they will look for in a life partner. If you do not risk emotional intimacy, you are learning the give and take of one-on- one communication! If you do not risk emotional intimacy, you are learning the give and take of one-on- one communication! –*Marital relationship skills are jeopardized.

#3. Cite evidence from the Duke study that states many “students are not fans of the current social norms.” Use quotes. Women: Men are “too lazy” to go out on dates. Women: Men are “too lazy” to go out on dates. Men: Women are too serious and too ambitious. Men: Women are too serious and too ambitious. Both said that they perceived the “hook-up” as the only intimacy available, and this it was NOT emotionally satisfying. Both said that they perceived the “hook-up” as the only intimacy available, and this it was NOT emotionally satisfying.

More quotes… Duke female sophomore: “You want somebody to have fun with but not the obligation, and like [men] see it as going hand in hand and it doesn’t…. “I totally don’t want the tied down thing right now, but I’d love a guy who would say, ‘Hey, let’s go to dinner and I’ll take you to a movie’ But I don’t want a boyfriend right now. I don’t, but a fun guy would be great. It’s, like, impossible to find.” Duke female sophomore: “You want somebody to have fun with but not the obligation, and like [men] see it as going hand in hand and it doesn’t…. “I totally don’t want the tied down thing right now, but I’d love a guy who would say, ‘Hey, let’s go to dinner and I’ll take you to a movie’ But I don’t want a boyfriend right now. I don’t, but a fun guy would be great. It’s, like, impossible to find.”

One more quote: 19 year old man: “You are trying to meet someone you will be with the rest of your life, but in the meantime you have to relieve the stress. We treat sex very loosely. One of my professors said it’s like currency in our generation, and it’s lost a lot of its meaning. But our generation is looking for that relationship.” 19 year old man: “You are trying to meet someone you will be with the rest of your life, but in the meantime you have to relieve the stress. We treat sex very loosely. One of my professors said it’s like currency in our generation, and it’s lost a lot of its meaning. But our generation is looking for that relationship.”

#4. Why is the hook-up so troubling to so many researchers? If young adults are “commitment phobic,” that is a concern! If young adults are “commitment phobic,” that is a concern! Where does that leave the future of marriage, family – especially children?! Where does that leave the future of marriage, family – especially children?! –The children are our future, right? –Is the traditional family at risk? –Is all of society

Class Poll… Your ballot… Your ballot… –2 questions Gender: Gender: –Male –Female Do you prefer… Do you prefer… –Group date with possible resulting hook-up encounter –Group date –One-on-one traditional date
