Second CarboSchools booklet Publication end of chapters : Key findings from CarboEurope/Ocean (+a new question: ocean acidification) Examples of school projects Actions to reduce GHG emissions -(Individuals) -Schools, pupils & teachers -Research institutes & scientists WP 22: Dissemination, exploitation and management of knowledge

Key question It´s not the responsibility of scientists to discuss solutions, but of society. Then why should scientists promote reduction of CO2 emissions & reduce their own emissions ? Scientists are part of society – when the whole society discusses changes, we are also concerned As scientists talking to society (eg carboschools) we have a particular responsibility Perhaps even more when we talk to politicians (eg Bali declaration) We should be ahead! Instead of behind… cf gender issues WP 22: Dissemination, exploitation and management of knowledge

Social responsibility DO WE SAY « we are those who know so we can tell you what you should do to solve the problem » OR « we know a bit of what’s happening, therefore we do our best in our own lives and work to contribute to the solution, and by sharing with you our knowledge we challenge you to also do the best in your lives & work » Research institutions who believe they are part of society and take serious their social responsibility are effectively changing their own management of resources, energy, waste etc. & run their own low emission policy. WP 22: Dissemination, exploitation and management of knowledge

At the institute level Main potential for change: at the institute level - Bergen experience WP 22: Dissemination, exploitation and management of knowledge

Action plan to reduce CO 2 emissions (LEP)/ introduction to the new CarboSchools booklet WP 22: Dissemination, exploitation and management of knowledge -May 2007: CARBOOCEAN members were asked whether their institutes have a “Low Emission Policy” (LEP) or were working on it -It seems that only very few institutes already have adopted a LEP or are planning for it -Please encourage you institute to participate in the LEP-initiative! -Example: Bjerknes Centre of Climate Research, Norway (->You find BCCR’s working documents in your conference folder)

1. Save energy on your way to and from work 1.1 Create a reward system for everyone who walks, cycles or takes the bus -create a reward system equivalent to the price of a monthly bus ticket Think about: -how to design a “contract” that a car is not used to travel to work (e.g. sign under the yearly appraisal interview) -how to ensure safe bike parking spaces -how to provide facilities to take a shower at work WP 22: Dissemination, exploitation and management of knowledge

2. Save energy on business trips 2.1 Reduce air travel: -Recommend travel by train -Decide on a travel policy that encourages travel by train, if possible, and -Shortest distance travel by plane even if prices are more expensive 2.2 Institute climate fund: If the institute initiates climate-offset for travel, the money could be used to pay for the CO 2 -reducing actions themselves. Such money can be used locally to finance any projects at the institute (for example solar cells) or projects in other countries. 2.3 Use videoconference system: Check whether a videoconference system is already available at the institute or another department and could be tested by your institute. If this is useful, try to share the facility or buy another system for your institute. Access Grid systems cost between 6000 and 12000€. WP 22: Dissemination, exploitation and management of knowledge

3. Save energy directly at the institute! 3.1 Install switches that turn lights off automatically An automatic switch-off turns off the lights at for example 17: Install automatic PC switch-off at night Turn off computers. The IT-department can automatically shut down all computers at a given time (e.g. 6 o’clock at night). 3.3 Buy Green PCs in the future Fujitsu-Siemens have just introduced a ’Green computer’ that uses 50% less energy than an average PC and can be recycled 3.4 Install double-sided printing on all computers 3.5. Improve temperature regulation Check heating system WP 22: Dissemination, exploitation and management of knowledge

-> Is there anything that your institute and you can do? WP 22: Dissemination, exploitation and management of knowledge

At the IP level Can we change from « business as usual » ? Promote low emission policy in partner institutes Reduce travel? More virtual mobility? Promote rail trips? Choose « green » hotels & conference centers, or with lower standards? …your ideas? …How to push that forward? WP 22: Dissemination, exploitation and management of knowledge

Please send information on LEP in your institute to Andrea This information will be circulated within CARBOOCEAN to stimulate new initiatives WP 22: Dissemination, exploitation and management of knowledge
