Facts (you can check!) Safe environment Respect Open mind Informed decision Your commitment to each other

Some associates say they’ve been approached to sign a union card. We are here to answer questions, present the facts, and share opinions. Associates have questions about those cards and a union.

CARD SIGNING TARGETING The union may spend months, even years, planning a campaign against your employer. CARD SIGNING Organizers collect signed union cards, often through workers who want the union. The union and your employer have 3-5 weeks to campaign for your vote. ELECTION CAMPAIGN VOTE NEGOTIATIONS Months to years Up to one year 3 – 5 weeks Often years No guarantee of a contract. UNION CONTRACT ? Your employer is REQUIRED BY LAW to give your address to the union.

You may feel pressured to sign. A co-worker may ask you to sign a card. Someone from the union may come to your home. You may be invited to a meeting. You may notice more tension and complaining at work. Or hear troubling rumors about your job. “Agitation” is a common union tactic.

are legal documents Signing one may obligate you to follow union rules to pay union dues Are the property of the union The union is NOT required to keep cards confidential Union Authorization Cards

What are your obligations while represented? Y o u l o s e t h e r i g h t t o r e p r e s e n t y o u r s e l f. What will the union do with your personal information? What do you know about this group? Legal talk: this is a contract. How much does it cost?

Union organizers are trained like salesmen in tricks to get you to sign. “All your co- workers have signed already.” Take the time you need to make up your own mind. “Fill out this card if you want more information.” Shouldn’t you have all the information you need before signing anything? “Signing the card is really just giving everyone the chance to vote.” NOT TRUE. Union Persuasion Unions use signed cards to try to bypass an election, as “proof” a majority want the union.

What’s at stake for the union? Monthly union dues: $15.00 Annual union dues: $180.00 x 200 DUES PAYERS Annual income for union: $36,000.00 Value to union of a three-year contract $108,000.00 you pay $180.00 dues/year

Our Thoughts About Unions Everyone is unique. We can best resolve issues working together. A union has its own institutional goals. We don’t believe a union would do anything to help us compete and succeed.

How a union could impact you Unions are not free – dues may be deducted directly from your paycheck. The union would speak for you at work - whether you agree or not. A union would limit how we can solve problems together.

You can ask, but the union is not required to return a signed card.* *We are not encouraging and cannot assist you. I signed a card! Can I get it back? I signed a card! Can I get it back?

If approached by a union organizer… You have the legal right to say “no thanks.” Feel free to come to your managers with any concerns. Demand the time to make an informed decision. Ask the union for a written money- back guarantee.

Read Talk The union card fine print Ask friends and family about their experiences with unions Challenge How will you protect my personal info? If I sign, who will you tell? Where on this card does it guarantee I’ll have the chance to vote?
