State School Education (1870 – 1952)

 To gain knowledge of what state school education was like during this period.  To understand the changes in the National Curriculum.  To be able to collate knowledge from the last three lessons and produce a timeline.

 Working Class Schools started in  Took a while for all children to attend these schools as they had to stop working (less income into the family).  Employers wanted a more disciplined workforce with basic skills.  They needed to learn obedience and how to follow instructions – very different from public schools.

 Cramped  No recreation facilities  DISCIPLINE  Activities to keep order  Drilled into learning

 After the Boer War (ill-disciplined and unfit working class in the army) The Model Course was introduced.  Military Drill exercises were introduced (exercises through regimented commands).

 After the ill health of the nation after WW1.  Recreational exercises was seen as very beneficial. It was also seen as being enjoyable and therefore ‘THERAPEUTIC’.  It included regimented exercise but also ‘free-movement’ e.g. dance and small games.

 Still fitness and therapeutic as well as using your mind.  Athletics, gym and games were included – still formalised.  Kit was worn and gymnasia built.

 Needed to rebuild schools.  Apparatus and playing fields were introduced.  Movement away from prescription to a more creative, child-centred, movement style of learning.  1952 – ‘Moving and Growing’

 Using your text book and the information I have just given you about the development of Physical Education, complete the table.

DRAW A TIMELINE OF ALL THE KEY DATES AND EVENTS FROM 1800 – 1950 (PUBLIC SCHOOLS – POST WW2) Think about everything you have looked at so far: Rational Recreation, Industrial Revolution, FA Founded, State School Education, etc

 Complete the physical education grid.  Complete the timeline of key dates  Complete the 2 worksheets 12.1 and 12.2
