Amazing Adjectives What are adjectives? Adjectives are descriptive words, words we use to describe nouns. They are add-ons, we include them in our writing to be more descriptive. Adjectives describe nouns by giving some information about an object's size, shape, age, color, origin or material

Size: Long Island is a large part of New York. Shape: Roads upstate can be narrow. Age: The young child cried and cried when he realized he should have never become a Ranger fan. Color: The sky is dark around 6 o’clock. Origin: The Beatles are an English band. Material: My new pillow is soft.

What are the adjectives in the following sentences? Tom took the shortest way home. The screen was blurry. Dan stepped in something gross. Alexis felt old on her 30 th birthday. Tanya bought new shoes.

Verbs What are verbs? Verbs are words that show the actions of nouns. There are Physical, Mental, and Being verbs.

Physical: Let’s run to the corner and back. I hear the train. Call me when you’re finished with class. Mental: I know the answer. She recognized me from across the room. Do you believe everything people tell you? Being: I am a student. We are circus performers. Please be quiet.

What are the verbs in the following sentences? The cow jumped over the moon. Heather thought the test was simple. The students shoved their way through the halls. The weather outside is frightful. “Ryan, be quiet!”

Adverbs Adverbs are words that describe an adjective or verb, but not a noun! Adverbs show when, where, how, in what way, and to what extent, a noun completed an action.

When: He ran yesterday. Here the adverb, “yesterday”, is describing when the verb, “ran”, took place. Where: He ran here. The adverb, “here”, is describing where the verb, “ran”, took place. Although “here” is a “place” it is not a noun, because without a physical explanation, “here”, is not identifiable. How: He ran quickly. The adverb, “quickly”, describes the verb, “ran”. The adverb is showing us how the action was completed.

In what way: He ran barefoot.The action, “ran”, was done in a specific way, “barefoot”. To what extent: He ran fastest.The adverb “fastest”, describes how the verb, “ran”, was done in comparison to others.

Adverbs don’t just describe verbs, they also describe adjectives and other adverbs! He is an extremely kind person. The adverb, “extremely”, shows “how” kind of a person they are. He ran very quickly.“Very” and “quickly” are each adverbs. The adverb, “very”, describes how quickly the subject ran.

What are the adverbs in the following sentences? Jennifer was unusually timid. “That was so nice of you!” Cars were moving very quickly. “Did you really try?” Gladys drove crazily in her bumper car.

Homework: Write 5 sentences; be sure to include an adjective, verb, and adverb in each sentence. Identify each part of speech however you like (circle adjectives, write verbs in blue, etc.)
