Healthy Skin

Do Now ! What is the function of the skin?

Words To Know! Epidermis- the outer layer of the skin. Dermis- the inner layer of the skin. Melanin- cells in epidermis that give the skin its color. Freckles are spots of melanin.

Functions Of The Skin Skin protects you from germs. Skin controls body temperature. Skin is a shield against water. Nerve endings in the skin allow you to feel temperature, pressure, and pain.

The Skin Melanin consists of cells in the epidermis that give color to the skin. Sweat glands allow sweat to escape from skin through pores.

The Skin The dermis includes blood vessels, nerve endings, and hair roots. Oil glands in the dermis keep your skin soft and waterproof.

Taking Care Of Your Skin Keep your skin clean. Regular washing with soap. Protect your skin from the sun. Use sunscreens. Eat a balanced diet. Get enough exercise and sleep.

Skin Problems Acne- is the skin condition caused by overly active oil glands. Dermatologist- a doctor who treats skin disorders.

Healthy Hair All you need to do is wash it often and brush it regularly. Washing: use a shampoo. Let your hair dry by itself. Brushing: brushing once a day helps spread the natural oils down the hair shaft.

Hair and Scalp Problems Dandruff- is a flaking of the outer layer of dead skin cells. Common scalp problem caused by dry scalp. At times an itchy scalp is caused by head lice. These are tiny insects that live in the hair.

Review Identify basic structure of the skin. Summarize four health behaviors that promote healthy skin and hair.
