3 Journal Quick Write List the things you do to take care of your teeth, skin and hair.

5 Plaque – A soft, colorless, sticky film containing bacteria that grows on your teeth. Tartar – A hard material that forms when plaque builds up on teeth. TOOTH DECAY

6 Brushing and Flossing Soft-bristled brush – toothpaste that contains fluoride. Fluoride – a substance that fights tooth decay. at least once a day.

7 Visit your dentist twice a year for dental checkups and cleaning. Healthy Teeth

8 Orthodontist – A dentist who specializes in dealing with irregularities of the teeth and jaw.

12 SKIN PROBLEMS ACNE – A skin condition caused by overly active oil glands.

13 Skin decorations can also cause skin problems: Tattoos Piercings Dermatologist – A doctor who treats skin disorders.

14 Your Hair  Grows fast  Hair shafts (the part you see)  Shafts determines appearance of your hair: wavy, straight or curly.  Hair color - melanin, the same substance that gives your skin its color.

16 Fixes For Damaged Hair Oily Scalp = flat stringy and greasy hair Dry Scalp = coarse and brittle hair Always use the right shampoo for your hair type: dry, oily or normal. Protect your hair from sun and heat exposure. Use a special shampoo to remove chlorine from your hair.

17 Dandruff – flaking of the outer layer of dead skin cells. A dry scalp usually causes dandruff. Wash your hair regularly to control dandruff. Use a dandruff shampoo if needed. Head Lice – tiny wingless insects live in the hair. Easy to catch from someone else. DO NOT SHARE: hats, combs and brushes To kill them: shampoo with a medicated shampoo. Wash all our bedding, towels, combs, brushes and clothing. Clean your house.

18 Washing – Use a gentle shampoo; rinse completely If you use a dryer, use it on low heat. Do not wash too often, this can dry out your hair. Brushing and Combing – Once a day helps spread natural scalp oils down the hair shaft. Too much brushing, breaks hair shaft or pulls hair out. Brush with rounded or balled tips not to scratch scalp.
