The construction of anti-celebrity celebrity through reality television

Abstract The comparison between different reality series constructs two types of celebrities. The construction of the celebrity creates the “anti-celebrity celebrity” and establishes a particular “celebrity status” on the criteria of a specific reality show. The anti-celebrity celebrity receives more fame based on their attitude rather than talent. Their personalities appeals to a particular audience which increases their celebrity status. Reality series gives them the chance to utilize the benefits of television and deceive the audience in creating fake personas. If they can help us realize the “anti-celebrity celebrity” status can be obtained by anyone, we’ll overlook their negatives characteristics an accept the lack of talent that is portray by the participants.

The construction of the two celebrities Anti-celebrity - These celebrities have obtain a certain amount of wealth, and are embodying the lifestyle of a celebrity before they become famous. They have similar traits of the celebrity and have been for a long time but don’t become noticed until they get a reality series which follows them only because they are wealthy. In turn they “almost” have the status however their lack of talent doesn’t entitle them to become real celebrities Anti-Celebrity Celebrity-Their lack of talent is publicity known in front of millions by competing in shows which has them do tasks and challenges to become the winner. These shows are in the form of competitions and exhibitions.

Actions/ Situations (Drama) These are the shows where an actual celebrity tries to proclaim their “celebrity” status by partaking in weird tasks and challenges to become recognized. Though they embarrass themselves in the process, they don’t want to be classified other than a celebrity. Exhibitions They group together complete strangers to battle it out and see who will become the ultimate winner for the reality show. They have to perform various crazy challenges and tasks to eliminate the other competitors. Sometimes this can get very vicious and cause a lot of chaos for everyone. Competitions These are the very unique character who will do anything to get attention, they are judged by millions of viewers but in most cases their crazy antics gives them more appeal then their talent or lack thereof.

Attitude Anti-Celebrity Celebrity- They both have extreme personalities which gets noticed by the audience immediately. Many of them are very flamboyant, loud and have peculiar attitudes which will give them fame. Their mission is to be so strange that it makes us gravitate towards them more and find out the mystery behind their personality. If their unknown to society then most of them have certain segments to introduce us to them. Anti – Celebrity- They want everyone to get an introduction to why they are “anti- celebrity. They have already received some attention before, they want to gloat to everyone about their wealth and now get a chance to show the world that they can accomplish more then they supposedly were before. Celebrity- They already have a ego before their even appearing on these show. Since they were known beforehand they expect everything to be easy, whoever is the “villain “ for the show is the one who gets the most attention and makes an idiot of themselves. The biggest personality on the show is the person who wins, well most of the time.
