LESSON 6.2 PHOTOSYNTHESIS

. 1. What is Glucose? “A simple sugar”

2. Where does Glucose come from?

It is produced by plants during photosynthesis.

3. Why does the plant produce glucose?

To have a place to STORE the energy that it absorbed from the sun.

4. What is LIGHT? A Form of RADIANT ENERGY

5. How does radiant energy travel?

Radiant energy travels in WAVES from a wave source.

6. What is the wave source for visible light?

The Sun!

7. Draw a picture of a wave and label the following wave parts: crest, trough, wavelength, amplitude pix

Top of the wave

Bottom of the wave

Wavelength Distance from crest to crest

Amplitude Distance from crest to rest position.

8. What is White Light?

. The part of the Radiant energy from the sun we can see. pix

9. What is the visible spectrum? The Range of colors that make up white light

10. What are the colors that make up the visible spectrum? Label and color

RED Orange Yellow Green Indigo Violet

11. Why are the colors in the visible spectrum arranged in the order in which they are found?

The colors ROY G BIV are arranged according to their wavelengths. PIX

ROYGB IV

12. Which color as the longest wavelength that people can see?

RED

13. Which color as the shortest wavelength people can see?

Violet

14. Why do objects appeared to be colored?

A An object will absorb some colors and REFLECT others

B What ever color it reflects, is the color it appears to be.

15. Complete the following chart:

Absorbs what colors? Orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet

Reflects what colors? RED

Grass Absorbs: Red, orange, yellow, blue, Indigo, violet

Grass Reflects: GREEN

LAB TABLE Absorbs: All colors Reflects: Nothing!

Projection Screen? Absorbs Nothing! Reflects? All colors at one time!

16. Why do people wear light colored clothes in the summer and dark colored clothes in the winter?

Dark clothes absorb MORE HEAT. Light colored clothes REFLECT heat.

17. What is Photosynthesis?

A metabolic process used by plants to:

a)Harvest solar energy from the sun b) store this energy within the bonds of glucose molecules

18.What are Color Pigments?

Chemicals that will absorb and use the energy from certain wavelengths of light and reflect others.

19. How does a producer use color pigments?

To absorb radiant energy that it can use for photosynthesis

20. What is Chlorophyll a ?

A green pigment used by most producers to absorb the sun’s energy.

21. Define ABSORPTION SPECTRUM:

Those colors taken in by an object and not reflected away.

22. What wavelengths of the visible spectrum are absorbed and used by the chlorophyll a?

ROYB IV

23. What happened to the green wavelength? The green was “not used ” and reflected away!

24. What are CAROTENOIDS?

Plant pigments that appear to be YELLOW, ORANGE, AND RED

25. Where are carotenoids usually found?

Fruit, flowers, leaves

26. Why are the carotenoids invisible during the summer and yet you dan see them during the Fall?

A. During the summer, the chlorophyll is so abundant that the green covers up the other colors.

b.) In the Fall, the green goes away and then you can see the other colors.

27. Write and Balance the photysynthesis equation:

PUT ON DRY ERASE BOARD.

28. Draw, label, and color the illustration of a chloroplast:

Thylaloid Grana Stroma

29. Define the following terms:

Chloroplast: Organelle where photosynthesis takes place

Thylakoid membrane Internal membranes of the chloroplast

Grana: “Stacks of thylakoid that soak up the sun’s energy.

Stroma: Area where the sugar molecules are put together.

30. What are the light reactions?

Part of photosynthesis where the solar energy is absorbed.

31. Where does the light reactions occur? In the Grana

32. What are the Dark Reactions?

Part of photosynthesis where the glucose molecule is put together.

33. Where do the dark reactions occur?

In the STROMA

34. List the steps of the LIGHT REACTIONS.

1. Sun’s rays hit the chloroplast! The energy knocks an electron from the chlorophyll in the grana.

2. The electron is used to put ADP and P together to create ATP which goes on to the dark reactions. ( Radiant becomes chemical )

3. Water is split! The electrons from the hydrogen are used to recharge the chlorophyll

4. The Hydrogen ion is then carried by NADP molecules into the stroma for the dark reactions. Oxygen is given off as waste.

35.What is the name of the Dark Reactions? “The Calvin Cycle”

36. What are the events of the calvin cycle?

1. ATP brought in from the light reactions to power the process.

2. Hydrogen ions brought in by carrier molecules.

3. Carbon dioxide comes into the stroma from the air.

4. Water is unloaded from the root system.

5. Sugar molecules are put together.

6. Sugar molecules are assembled into starches which can be transported and stored easily.

37. How are cell respiration and photosynthesis related?

1. Carbon dioxide is produced as a waste product in the mitochondria during cell respiration.

2. Plants need the carbon dioxide for photosynthesis.

3. Plants give off oxygen as a waste which the mitochondria needs to make ATP.
