1 Photosynthesis

2 Photosynthesis: Step 1 – Light-Dependent Reaction
Sunlight is used to split water into hydrogen (H) and oxygen (O). The Oxygen is released to the atmosphere.

3 Photosynthesis: Step 2 – Light-Independent Reaction
This step is also called the Calvin Cycle or Light Independent Reaction because it does not need light. CO2 combines with the hydrogen (H) released during step 1 to form C6H12O6 (glucose)

4 What affects the rate of photosynthesis?
Amount of : - sunlight - CO2 - H2O - temperature All the reactions of photosynthesis are controlled by enzymes. Temperatures above or below the optimum temperature will slow down the chemical reactions.

5 Pigments of Photosynthesis
Pigments are molecules that absorb specific wavelengths (energies) of light and reflect all others. Chlorophyll is the main molecule in charge of capturing the energy from sunlight.

6 Why do plants look green? THEY RELFECT GREEN LIGHT!!!
Chlorophyll a absorbs …………….. light best. Chlorophyll b absorbs ……………. light best. Why do plants look green? THEY RELFECT GREEN LIGHT!!!

7 Other Pigments Present in Plants
Carotenoids: Orange-Red Xanthophyls: Yellow Anthocyanins: Red-Blue GET YOUR CLICKERS!

8 What is the process in which autotrophs trap the energy from the sun and store this energy in molecules such as carbohydrates. Predation Metabolism Cell Respiration Photosynthesis 10

9 Which of the following is not needed for photosynthesis?
Water Sugar Carbon Dioxide Sunlight 10

10 In addition to light and chlorophyll, photosynthesis requires
Water and oxygen Water and sugars Oxygen and Carbon Dioxide Water and carbon dioxide 9

11 The leaves of a plant are green because chlorophyll :
Reflects blue light Absorbs blue light Reflects green light Absorbs green light 9

12 Which is not a function of NADPH?
To carry energy for other organelles to do work To carry 2 high energy electrons To act as a carrier molecule To carry a hydrogen ion 10

13 Chloroplasts do not contain which of the following structures?
Mitochondria Thylakoids Stroma Chlorophyll Pigments 10

14 Energy from the sun is collected during the:
Light-independent reactions Light-dependent reactions Thylakoid reactions Krebs Cycle 10

15 Glucose is created during this step of photosynthesis.
Light-independent reaction Light-dependent reaction Thylakoid reactions Krebs Cycle 10

16 Which of the following would not directly impact the growth of a plant?
Spectrum of light Concentration of oxygen Concentration of carbon dioxide Availability of water Temperature 10

17 Which of the following is NOT produced in the light-dependent reactions?
NADPH Sugars Hydrogen Ions ATP 10
