Animal Behavior

Kinds of behavior Innate Behavior: an inherited behavior that does not depend on the environment or experience. Can be modified Example puppies inherit tendencies to chew. Learned Behavior: a behavior that has been learned from experience. All animals can learn. Example: we learn English

Survival Behavior Animals use their behavior to survive. In order to survive an animal must: Find food, water, and shelter. Animals find their food in many. Hunting (Predator/Prey), use tools, and adaptations. Sometimes there is competition (food/mates) Territory: an area that is occupied by one animal or group of animals that do not allow other members of the species to enter. Animals use their territories for: mating, find food, raise young.

Defensive Actions/Courtship Defensive behavior allows animals to protect resources, food, mates, territories, offspring. Camouflage, speed, odor, and weapons. Animals have special behaviors that help them find mates or courtship.

Seasonal Behaviors Migration: to travel from one place to another. Birds fly south for the winter. Hibernation: a period of inactivity and lowered body temperature that some animals undergo in winter as a protection against the cold weather and lack of food. Estivation: a period of inactivity and lowered body temp that some animals undergo in the summer. Animals reproduce during a particular season to take advantage of environmental conditions to help young survive.
