Art Futures Art Futures is a program throughout Philadelphia in which students are able to work with resident artists a few times a week. Together, the students, teachers, and artists come up with a project to be displayed and judged at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. At Father Judge High School, we created real working clocks, lamps, and other usable furniture out of recycled goods with the help of resident artist Neil Benson. A student won honorable mention on a personal piece while a group of students sold a lamp to another artist involved in the show.

Teaching and Learning Students should always be encouraged, not discouraged. Teachers have to find ways to have the class work together, constantly inspiring each other and helping each other out. Hands-on activities must be used in order to show individuality and talent. This discovery will be inspiration to students, allowing them to see that yes, they really CAN do it. Students should not simply say “I can’t do it”, but rather “What other ways could this be done”. Teachers must also realize that all students are different, and different should not be looked at as wrong, but simply as unique and interesting. Allow students their freedom, while still being there to scaffold them, you may be surprised with the outcome.Students should always be encouraged, not discouraged.
