2 Philosophy Every child, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, culture, or mental or physical disabilities, should have the opportunity to have a quality education rich in art. Art is essential in education because it provides students with the ability to develop self-confidence, critical thinking, and create problem-solving skills. Education in art helps students in many ways with other academic subjects and can help motivate students to learn other content areas. With a quality art education, students gain valuable skills that not only help them in other subject areas, but can also help in their careers. My objectives as a teacher are to reach every student in my classroom and provide them with the skills necessary to achieve their goals and prepare for the future. Art education should create an exciting and stimulating environment to provide active participants rather than passive learners. Individualism and creativity is an important element in my classroom. I also believe that no student should feel left out, and I am always looking for better ways to make each student feel important and needed. Students should learn about the history of art and artists as well as contemporary art and artists. Sudents should also learn how to think critically and critique their art and the art of others. By doing this, students increase their understanding and appreciation of art and its role in society. They also learn to respect other artists and their ideas through constructive critiques. Students should also be able to create their own art pieces utilizing a variety of media, tools, techniques, and processes to express their observations, feelings, ideas, and experiences. I also think that building a strong art community is very important to young artists. Students will feel that what they’re doing is actually making a difference if they are supported by an art-conscious community. To help build such a community, it is important for the students to be active participants in their community. By helping in their community, students are not only helping to enrich their community’s understanding of art but are also able to understand how art can affect the world around them. Inspiring students to become active participants in the visual arts is a powerful thing. I want to help students gain self- confidence by creatively working through problems and making works of art. When a student is proud of the work they created, I am proud as well. When they reach an understanding to a problem they were encountering in their creation of a piece of art, I am rejuvenated. I love to help students understand the world around them and how they can shape and change it. I believe a quality education in art can help make a positive difference in every student’s life. Home
