Student Engagement 2 Card Question: Give me an example of an eliciting response you would like to use. Announcements: Treats at end of class for survey-taking evidence (one more week—about the in- class videos, not the ones for graded activities Mastery 3 next week ADD TO CALENDAR: TUESDAY NOV 13 TH, MEET IN COMPUTER LAB, 3 RD FLOOR WITHERS FOR LIVETEXT TRAINING!!! ABC Analysis key—one “no name” assignment... ; 2 did wrong student-- Todays reading focus: pp ;

Last week Student engagement Eliciting responses Effective praise

Today Corrections and feedback Differentiated activities Cultural considerations for engagement

Providing Feedback Feedback video clip: Provide feedback about correctness of the response to the eliciting activity Feedback should be: – Supportive and encouraging – Informative about performance – Nonjudgmental – Close in time to the eliciting activity – Can be directed to individuals or entire class (see table top of p 159)

Verbal feedback “formula” (p. 159) First: Affirm the student: – Nice try, you got it part right – That’s an interesting answer Next: Rephrase or elaborate the question or problem – In addition to your idea about size, consider other aspects of room design... – That’s good so far. What do you think would be a possible problem with that idea?

Feedback Examples-what’s wrong? Fix it. Inappropriate 1.I can’t believe you got that wrong! 2.No. It’s wrong. 3.Here are the correct answers (puts up a list)—raise your hand if you got them all correct 4.I will give you feedback next Monday after I’ve had a chance to think about the problems you are having 5.5. OK..... Appropriate

Differentiated Activities Turn to p. 255, Instrument 10.3 – Family job: come up with specific examples of one differentiated activity in each column. – When you finish, look up the definition of “Self- regulated Materials” – rephrase the definition into your own words.

Culture and Engagement Cultural preferences for: – Types of activities—lecture, hands-on, self- reflection – Ways of interacting—group vs individual – Body proximity – What else?

Common Engagement Features Across Cultures (families come up with examples... ) 1.Cooperation not competition 2.Emphasize individual students unique backgrounds and strengths 3.Have a warm and caring classroom environment 4.Encourage high amounts of peer interaction 5.Uses many social reinforcers/little punishment 6.Wild Card!
