5 Common Core Shifts  Language Arts & Writing  1) Students will read more non-fiction text that covers social studies and science topics.  2) Provide textual evidence to support their thinking.  3) Read more challenging texts and build their vocabulary base.  4) Participate in class discussions and be able to present on a particular topic. 5

6 Common Core Shifts  Mathematics  1) Students will be presented with a more focused set of major math concepts and skills  2) New skills and concepts will be taught in a more organized way throughout the year and from one grade to the next.  3) Students will have to explain their reasoning as to how they arrived at an answer. 6

8 Classroom Rules 1. Listen carefully 2. Follow directions quickly. 3. Respect others. Be kind with your words and actions. 4. Respect school and personal property. 5. Work and play safely.

9 Consequences  Verbal Warning  2 nd Offense: Clip down; lose recess.  3 rd Offense: Clip down; lose recess. Phone call/note home  4 th Offense: Refer to office for further action.

11 Student Safety Use the sidewalk Do not walk through the parking lots Cross streets at the cross walk No running on cement or blacktop Keep hands and feet to self No shoes with wheels No weapons of any kind (real or pretend)

12 Homework Policy  Homework is assigned every Monday – Thursday and occasionally on Fridays. It is your child’s responsibility to bring his/her homework everyday to school.  Missed homework will have to be made up during your child’s recess time. (Zero Excuses Folder)  Your child should be reading a minimum of 20-25 minutes everyday for trimester 1. Amount of time will increase with each trimester.  When class work is not completed, it will be assigned as additional homework.  Notices that require parent signature will be sent home for incomplete assignments.

13 Homework Strategies  Designate a quiet place to work with supplies close at hand (Dictionary, pencil, paper).  Have a specific time to complete homework.  Have students explain what they are doing.  Organize backpack the evening before.  Limit TV. & Video Games (Have a set bedtime).

14 Grading Policy  Students will receive a percentage grade for exams taken in class and projects.  A90-100%  B80-89%  C70-79%  D60-69%  F 0-59%(no credit) Homework and in class work will be corrected in class. Teacher will choose assignments to include as part of student grades at her discretion.
