Terrorism in the Middle East By: Nathan Wigger

Current Events Even though the so called “War on Terror”, has slowed down in the middle east, terrorism. Just recently, there has been a threat from extremist in Libya. A young man in Southern California, made a video mocking the the Muslim prophet, Muhammad. So the Libyan extremist threaten him. In other recent events, the hit T.V. show South Park made fun of Muhammad as well. They got threaten by Al Qaeda if they don’t remove the prophet from their show.

Future of Terrorism Many experts believe that terrorism in the middle east will be blown away, due to the facts that the biggest leader they had was killed. Others believe that terrorism could be worse. This is so, due to the fact of technology advancing, which would mean that terrorist could make deadlier threats and they could be more dangerously armed.

The U.N. and Terrorism To counter act terrorism, the U.N. had special forces they were put in place, but that was two decades ago in Bosnia and was insufficient. After 9/11, the U.N. made these laws on terrorism: 1). Criminalize the financing of terrorism 2). Freeze without delay any funds related to persons involved in acts of terrorism 3). Deny all forms of financial support for terrorist groups 4). Suppress the provision of safe haven, sustenance or support for terrorists 5). Share information with other governments on any groups practicing or planning terrorist acts 6). Cooperate with other governments in the investigation, detection, arrest, extradition and prosecution of those involved in such acts; and 7). Criminalize active and passive assistance for terrorism in domestic law and bring violators to justice.

The Fight Against Terrorism To fight against terrorism, many countries don’t negotiate with terrorists. Other decided to stand against them and take the battle to the middle east. This included the United States, who had the biggest war spending in their history. The biggest fight against it though was on May 2nd 2011 when Al Qaeda leader was shot and killed, Osama Bin Laden.

Resolving the Issue To stop these acts from happening many steps need to be made: 1). Find another source besides oil for energy. 2). Quit mocking their religion and prophet. 3). To pull out most of our armed forces. 4). Working together to set aside our differences and issues.
