5. Lifestyle – Americans donate more money to charity than any other nation in the world. This shows that citizens of the U.S. are able to live a way of life that meets their satisfaction and allows them to give money those less fortunate.

- Terrorism is the unlawful use of, or threatened use of, violence against individuals or property for the purpose of intimidating or causing fear for political or social means.
The United States has been subjected to terrorism, both at home and abroad.
The September 11, 2001, attacks were the most destructive acts of terrorism ever committed on American soil.

9. II. September 11th – Attack The hijackers crashed two planes into the World Trade Center towers. They crashed one into the Pentagon, the U. S. military headquarters near Washington, D. C. The fourth plane crashed into a field in Pennsylvania without striking its intended target (some believe the White House), after some passengers wrestled the hijackers. Over 3,000 people were killed.

Who Did This? - A group, known as al-Qaeda, which was formed to fight the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in This group, led by Osama bin Laden, later began to oppose American influence in Muslim lands. It started to target Americans and U.S. allies (friends) after the Persian Gulf War in 1991.

Where does al-Qaeda operate? - Now has terrorist cells in over 100 countries including the United States.

14. The terrorist group al-Qaeda has created a global network, or worldwide interconnected group, of extremist Islamic terrorists. After September 11, 2001, the United States organized a coalition, or an alliance, to prevent future terrorist attacks. Coalition against terrorism includes: Canada, China, Britain, Pakistan, Russia, and others. These ally nations against terrorism all work together to share information and make arrests.

Terrorism is a critical threat to national and global security. It is not limited to outside threats. In the past few decades both domestic and international terrorist acts have increased in violence.
To help prevent future attacks the Department of Homeland Security was created increasing:
New airport security measures
Extra security measures in public places

Terrorists act in secret and move between countries.
- some want territory
- some oppose government policies
Terrorists could use biological, chemical, or nuclear weapons. Biological weapons refer to bacteria and viruses that can be used to harm or kill people, animals, or plants.

18. VI. Reasons for the Attacks
The reasons that Middle Eastern terrorists have targeted Americans are as follows:
For supporting the wealthy Middle Eastern kingdoms and families through the oil industry.
For spreading American beliefs of democracy (right of people to vote), capitalism (private ownership of businesses) and Christianity which threatens traditional Muslim values.
For supporting Israel - homeland for Jewish people in an area that is primarily Muslim.
