Ocean Life By William Allison

TIDES Tides are the rise and fall of the ocean. Tides cycle as the moon rotates around the earth and as the position of the sun changes. TYPES OF TIDES High tide = Where the sea level is at it’s highest. Low tide = Where the sea is at it’s lowest. The weather can affect the tide, but the location of the moon has the biggest impact.

WHAT LIVES IN THE OCEAN? Creatures that live near the surface are …… Tuna fish, Ocean sunfish, Marlin’s, Flying fish, Black headed gull, Shoal of mackerel, Violet jelly fish, dolphins

What lives in the deep Below 100 metres animals there is little or no sunlight and it is very cold. No plants can survive. Many animals live on food that falls down from above. These are some creatures that live in the deep: Deep Sea Squid Deep Sea Prawn Scaly Dragonfish

Ocean Floor

This photo was taken at the S.E.A aquarium. Creatures that live on the ocean floor are Octopus, Squid, Crab

Corals

Corals are made of tiny animals called polyps. Each polyp contains lots of tiny algae. Corals capture plankton, krill and small fish, using tentacles.

Fish

Fish use gills to breath under water. Most fish are steamlined and have fins to help them balance and steer.

Sharks

LIFE CYCLE OF A GREAT WHITE SHARK When a great white shark is born it swims away from its mother. Their mother may see them as prey. A baby shark is called a pup. At birth the pup is about five feet long, it may reach three times that length when fully grown. Many baby sharks do not survive past one year as other great white sharks will eat them. Young great white sharks eat fish and rays. As it grows its favorite food is sea mammals such as sea lions and seals. Sharks are fast hunters. Most sharks live between twenty and thirty years.

SEA JELLYS Sea jellies can be found in the ocean, rivers and lakes. Sea jellies can only tell light from dark. They have no bones and are ninety % water. They do not have a brain !!!! They can sting when they are dead.
