The City  Bayeux has a perfectly preserved medieval ensemble, magnificent cathedral and world famous tapestry  It’s a smaller more intimate city  Despite the large crowds of summer tourists, it’s a far more enjoyable place to visit

Location  Bayeux is located in northern France about 166 miles northwest of Paris  It lies on the Aure River in Normandy and is not far from the English Channel

History  The Battle of Hastings was a fight to the throne between English nobleman, Harold, and William Duke of Normandy

History continued  When Harold became king, William felt he deserved it so he brought his army to England to fight for the position

The Battle of Hastings  The battle lasted 14 years  It ended with the death of Harold, allowing William to become King of England  Historians believe that if William had not won the battle, England would not have become the most powerful country in the world

Bayeux Tapestry  The most unique attraction in Bayeux  Tells the story of the Battle of Hastings in a visual way so that people who cannot read could understand

Bayeux Tapestry  It is a work of embroidery that hangs in the town’s cathedral  It is 230 feet long and 3 feet in height and made of wool embroidered onto linen
