In the 8th century AD the Vikings invaded Britain. They came from Norway, Sweden and Denmark.
In 1066 the Normans conquered Britain. They came from northern France. conquer /ˈkɒŋkər/ to take control of a foreign land. For the next 3 hundred years people spoke French and English in Britain. The ordinary people spoke English and the aristocracy spoke French.
