Cabbage lab By Vanessa Velasco

Purpose To measure the ph of various household materials by using a natural indicator to make an indicator chart.

Materials Knife Red cabbage leaves 1 cup measure Hot water 2 jars Clean white cloth Teaspoon Tape 3 sheets of white paper Pencil Ruler 10 plastic cups White vinegar Baking soda House hold ammonia Dropper Various house hold items

Procedure Put 1/2 cup of finley chopped red cabbage leaves in a and add 1/2 of hot water Strain the extract through a piece of cloth into a clean jar Tape 3 sheets of paper together. Draw a line 5 cm apart and label 1-14 Put about 1 cm indicator to the three cups. To one cup add several drops of vinegar. Add a pinch of baking soda to the other. On the third and final cup add ammonia. Repeat on household items

Conclusion In this lab the purpose was to indicate hosehold items on a ph scale. It would tell whether it was acidic or basic. Most of the cleaning products were acidic. What i could have improved on was having clear cups because it was hard to identify them on a ph scale.

Analyze and conclude The color of the indicator was at a basic condition. Some chemical changes that were responsible were vinegar, ammonia, baking soda, milk, lemon juice ,laundry detergent, dish detergent , and carbonated beverages. Vinegar: acidic , ammonia: basic, baking soda: neutral, milk: neutral, lemon juice: acidic, laundry detergent: acidic, dish detergent:acidic, dish detergent:acidic.
