1 Acid-Base Make-up Lab! Also known as: “Cabbage Juice Lab”
Remember to follow along with your lab sheet and click SLOWLY! Make sure the animation has time to do what it is supposed to do!

2 Read the introduction and “Important Information” paragraphs on your lab sheet:
You can see below the starting color of our Cabbage Juice in the “beaker” on the lower left hand side of this slide. If the color does not change at all then no chemical reaction took place. If it stays in the middle of the color scale then a “weak” acid or base was indicated by a chemical reaction If the new color that appears is found farther to either end of the scale, then a “strong” acid or base was indicated by a chemical reaction Cabbage Juice

3 Cabbage juice has now been added to each “basin” of the spot plate
Before you is what is called a “Spot Plate”. Each little dark grey circle is actually a little bowl like feature that can hold liquid. We can drop different chemicals in to each and mix them with other chemicals (using a “dropper”) to see if they will just “mix” (Physical Change); or if they will react (Chemical Change)! First, we will add cabbage juice to each “basin” (“bowl” features on Spot Plate) with a dropper. Take careful note of what color the cabbage juice is! Dropper Cabbage juice has now been added to each “basin” of the spot plate Cabbage Juice

4 Now make sure your data table is totally filled in
Now that each basin has cabbage juice in it, we will add different chemicals to each sample. The resulting color that we see will indicate to us if each is an acid, base or Neutral! Take note of each beginning color from the liquid we are adding (seen in the beaker on the left) (the “white” is actually showing a “clear” substance). Record in your data take this beginning color and predict what color SHOULD result when you mix the chemical with the cabbage juice. We will also we able to see examples of chemical and physical color changes! If the resulting color is what makes sense (when the two liquids are “mixed”) then it was a physical mixing. If the resulting color is not what was expected, then the result was a chemical reaction! Now make sure your data table is totally filled in And complete the questions that follow!
