raw materials in construction sector SIP - Raw materials ECTP Raw Materials technology in construction sector Angel Lopez Buendia Jose

raw materials in construction sector SIP - Raw materials ECTP More than 50% of the raw materials (wt) ~ 36% of emissions of greenhouse gases (CO 2 ) ~ 40% of the total energy used in Europe ~ 40% of the solid wastes (by weight) construction impact Source: Eurostat, 2011 Energy, transport and environment indicators EeB PPP PPP- Public Private Partnership (EU Energy Recovery Plan High demand of raw materials of low added value Urban mining concept for enhancing the recycling of products Advance or smart materials as substitutive raw materials toe: tonne of oil equivalent

raw materials in construction sector SIP - Raw materials ECTP raw material demand in construction

raw materials in construction sector SIP - Raw materials ECTP Specific action n° I.7: Flexible and mobile processing plants for industrial minerals and aggregates Specific action n° I.10: Supply of construction materials from urban mines Specific action n° IV.14: Standardisation and Environmental Technology Verification for concrete Specific action n° III/IV.1: EU Knowledge Base Specific action n° II.4: Substitution of Indium in transparent conductive layers Specific action n° IV.7: Resource efficiency through waste recovery in cement kilns Sepecific Ations RELATED ACTIONS

raw materials in construction sector SIP - Raw materials ECTP Specific action n° I.7: Flexible and mobile processing plants for industrial minerals and aggregates Specific action n° I.10: Supply of construction materials from urban mines “Zero wastes” Flexible & Mobile processing plant small deposits“urban mining” exploitation to processing Cement– concrete – aggregate - natural stone – gypsum plaster – ceramic – other industrial R&M extraction treatment conminution (crushing sorting) cutting transformation heating moulding finishing Low impact extraction Non-explosive based Processed materials > 20% energy saving > 60% transport saving Action of new extraction- processing

raw materials in construction sector SIP - Raw materials ECTP Specific action n° I.10: Supply of construction materials from urban mines Deconstruction improvement Construction & Demolition W “urban mining”CDW as raw material 80% aggregate recovery 95% wood recovery Separation technology Added value treatment Regulation concepts (EPV, waste as raw material) Recycling ratio 50% of total RM > 80% target Aggregate (also artificial aggregates) Geomaterials glass, ceramic, natural stone Metals (Cu, Fe, Al and alloys) Organic (wood, others) Aggregate (also artificial aggregates) Geomaterials glass, ceramic, natural stone Metals (Cu, Fe, Al and alloys) Organic (wood, others) Action recycling using CDW

raw materials in construction sector SIP - Raw materials ECTP 1.- Ensure the sustainable supply of raw materials for the construction sector including largest volume of industrial rocks (aggregates, sand, clays, gypsum, natural stone, etc) and metallic minerals (iron, aluminium,..) which represent about 80 % of the mining activities in Europe 2.- Enhance the processes associated to CDW with an harmonization of the techniques and innovative solutions for recycling products that are nowadays not recycled. 3.- Define and develop the urban-mining concept in the European regions in concordance with the environmental policies Benefits for the activities to the EIP-RM
