PodcastingPodcasting-the art of producing/delivering via the internet, the delivery of just about any type of content downloadable to a computer or MP3 like device. Software, Real Simple Syndication (RSS), allows the feed to automatically detect new files without any work on the user’s part. Podcasts allow the user to listen during the time/place of his/her choice. (Learning or entertainment made available 24 hours a day, at little cost to the user.) Video podcast, vodcast,vidcast- a podcast withVideo podcast, vodcast,vidcast- a podcast with the addition of a video clip image. (For all you visual learners or those liking lots of stimuli)

History of Podcasting 2000 – Concept Began 2001 – 1 st RSS enclosure in Scripting News weblog (Dave Winer) – Development and Refinement 2004 – term ‘podcasting’ 1 st used (Ben Hammersley) –2004: 526 hits on Google for “podcasts” –2009: over 90,000,000 hits on Google for “podcasts”

What can you do with a podcast? Blogs Audio books Educational content-(parents, students, larger community) Virtual tours Delivery of lectures/sermons Storytelling Journals Distributing audio/video files On line-professional or personal staff development The possibilities are endless. Podagogy… Podagogy- “the meeting of teaching & learning”* (through the use of an iPOD) Connecting with prior learning and objectives Framing information and relevance

What must a podcaster keep in mind? Select content that matches your audience. Content with lots of detail may be better delivered through another medium. Typically those using an iPOD are listening on the go or at his/her convenience. “Learning does not fit neatly into hours, minutes and seconds, so neither should teaching.”*** Have a clear purpose for each podcast. Your podcast focus should match your instructional goal. “Chunk” content or coursework.*** Be creative…listeners have a choice of podcasts…come up with a strategy that fits i.e., time, problem/solution, expert interviews, emotional hook etc. Perfecting your production. Communicate expressively, be yourself, and weed out extra information. Start with the end in mind. Make your podcast part of the required learning. Value it as an instructional tool.

Why care about podcasting? Podcasting allows education to become more and more portable. It’s one more way to reach the “echoboomers”. Podcasting is growing exponentially. November 2004, 500 podcast sources, June 2005,6000 sources. 2007, 100,000 podcasts. Some sources estimate 60 million Americans will be listening to podcasts by 2010.** Radio content is now distributed via podcasts. It’s an inexpensive educational tool which appeals to the majority of young learners. Podcasting puts the learner in control, listening at the owner’s discretion. It allows students to use their technology-based systems for education. Podcasting is an efficient tool which can be used to deliver the product of the collaborative process.

Podcasting…where does it fit in with FUTURE-READY STUDENTS FOR THE 21ST CENTURY Students at all ages are engaged, involved in teams, involved in project-based work and problem solving using technologies. All students are involved in complex print and digital reading and are doing mathematics at a high level. Students are taking challenging courses that involve a global perspective and, ultimately, lead to post-secondary educational experiences. Students are assessed on, not only core knowledge, but also on life skills and information/technology communication skills. Professionals are well trained and knowledgeable about world connections. Collaboration and project/problem-based, technology-enhanced teaching and learning is supported with 21st century, technology-enhanced assessments ; not only providing summative information but also data to inform instruction throughout the year.

Podcasting…where does it fit in with FUTURE-READY STUDENTS FOR THE 21ST CENTURY The school environment is supported by distributed leadership. As part of a professional learning community, teachers grow in their understanding of their students’ needs and of best practices to meet those needs. School climate supports positive teacher-student relationships and is structured to support planning and collaboration among professionals and students. The facility itself is structurally designed to support teaching and learning, including the use of cutting-edge technology. Twenty-first century information systems support the teaching and learning processes and foster communication, collaboration and data-driven decisions to improve student performance.
