3 THE READ/WRITE WEB In almost every area of life, Read/Write Web is changing our relationships to technology and rewriting the age-old paradigms oh how things work. In 1989, Tim-Berners-Lee had a gain vison for the internet when he began development of the World Wide Web. At the time, the internet was not much more than a network of computers, it was just a small blip on the radar screens of all but the more technologically savvy. Berners-Less saw the potential to construct a vast “web” of link information.

5 THE READ/WRITE WEB CONTINUE… So he wanted to make it a collaborative medium, a place where we could all meet and read and write. The first part of Berners-Lee’s dream came to fruition in 1993, with the development of the Mosaic Web browser. Seemingly overnight, the internet went from a text-and- number-based research tool for the few to a colorful, graphic world of information for the masses. Millions of people son started going online to read or “surf” the web for information and entertainment.

6 THE NEW WORLD WIDE WEB As early as 2003, a Pew internet + American Life Project founded that more than 53 million American adults, or 44 percent of adults are internet users. Internet users, had used the internet to publish their thoughts, respond to others, post pictures and share files. In the early 2009, one of many blog-tracking services, listed over 133 million blogs(short for weblogs).

7 THE NEW WORLD WIDE WEB CONTINUE… Blogs are the first widely adopted easy publishing tool of the Read/Write Web. Blogs are where people use to create personal journals of their lives, build resources sites with colleagues, and post informational news for people that do not know to code pages or transfers files.

9 SOCIAL LEARNING What is social learning? Social learning theory posits that learning is a cognitive process that takes place in a social context and can occur purely through observation or direct instruction, even in the absence of motor reproduction or direct reinforcement.

10 SOCIAL LEARNING Did you know today students of all ages are far ahead of their teachers in computer literacy?

11 STUDENTS AND COMPUTER LITERACY Students prefer to access subject information on the internet. BUT WHY? Students find more accessible information. Its faster than reading a book to find the answers. The information is more up to date. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AaF2OmWvei4

12 DID YOU KNOW……..? KIDS AS YOUNG AS FIRST GRADE ARE MIGRATING INTO SITES SUCH AS, CLUB PENGUIN AND WEBKINZ. (SOCIAL NETWORKING SITES WITH TRAINING WHEELS) 13 year old Mathew used podcasting by creating “Escape From the World.” Which is a regular digital broadcast of technology related to news that he produced and posted on the web. www.matthewbischoff.com 81% of students in 7-12 grade have email accounts. 75% have at least one Instant Messenger. 97% strongly believe technology is important in education. 65% OF ADOLESCENTS HAD A SOCIAL SITE.

13 ONLINE LIFE IS SO MUCH BIGGER THAN THE INTERNET! It has become a strategy to how we live, survive, and thrive in the 21 century. Cyber space is apart of everyday life.

14 DID YOU KNOW TECHNOLOGY HAS NEUROLOGICAL EFFECTS? Years of the computer results in children who think differently than those who don not. (William D. Winn) They develop hypertext minds. Their cognitive structure works differently. Students may not be well suited to the more linear progression of learning that most educational systems promote.

15 WHY? Most teachers weren’t exposed to technology. Therefore, there is a disconnect from the teacher’s way of teaching to the student’s way of learning. Teacher’s usually teach the way they were taught (pedagogy) causing for an educational system to be out of touch with reaching the students.

16 LEARNERS AS TEACHERS Technology can create powerful learning networks if used properly and appropriately. Using global networks to keep up with current events.

17 TEACHER’S TOOL BOX Weblogs Wikis Really Simple Syndication(RSS)-allows educators to subscribe to feeds of all content created on the internet. Aggregators- collects and organizes the content retrieved by RSS. Social Bookmarking- saves websites, allow readers to save full context and organize certain topics under a category.(diigo.com/delicious.com) Online Photo Galleries

19 KEEPING STUDENTS SAFE Child Internet Protection Act- to filter content that is accessible in the internet. Schools must monitor online activities COMMON SENSE

20 Using technology and the internet may not be as simple as passing out worksheets in class, however the learning opportunities that these tools offer makes it worth using and implementing IF INSTRUCTED CORRECTLY.
