Assignment 2 October 28

Assignment 2 Is due in one week, November 4 Your assignment is considered submitted when: –You have sent the zipped file to the submission server –Your website is online at cmpt165.cs.sfu.ca –You have turned in the paper copy of your assignment If you assignment is late, the day you have all 3 of these items is the day it is considered submitted –If you finish, but don’t have the paper copy, it is late November 4 is a Friday –If you do not turn in your paper copy until Monday, it is 3 days late –You can turn in your paper copy to myself during class, or the TAs (Yang has office hours on Tuesdays and Majid on Thursdays)

Company/Product Hopefully you have all chosen a company/product to sell –Try not to have a company which sells all sorts of stuff Food, clothing, computers –Part of your grade will be how appropriate your site is for the product you sell If you sell random things, very difficult to get a good mark

Company/Product, cont. Remember not to use any copyrighted images –If it says “royalty free” but requires that you purchase the image, it is not free. You just have to only pay for it once Copyrighted images will receive a 0 this time. If you are unsure, ask

What You Must Have 2 stylesheets –1 regular stylesheet –1 alternate stylesheet –Must be linked correctly, example on assignment 2 page A company with a name A logo for your company 3 products (at least) –Or 3 services W3C logo which shows that the page is valid xhtml 1.0 strict

Site Layout Your assignment 2 should be in a folder called “assignment2” or something similar –Inside this is a subdirectory for any images –Your.css file must be in your assignment2 folder Your index.html should have a link to your assignment2 homepage –And!! Links to your two stylesheets

Submission Zip your assignment2 folder and upload it to the submission server –The assignment has not yet been added, I will do this today Upload your assignment to the cmpt165.cs.sfu.ca server Print out screenshots of each of your pages showing both of your stylesheets –If you have 3 pages, you will have 6 images –Does not have to be in color –On the FRONT page of your submission should be your name, userid, and student number (obvious, but I’ll put it here anyhow) –On the BACK you will attach a copy of the marking sheet I will give you next week

Validation Every single one of your pages must validate (except index.html) –Each page must have the W3C logo on the bottom showing it is valid –If you do not know how to do this, come to office hours Your pages must be STRICT xhtml 1.0 Your CSS pages must also validate

What if they don’t Validate? You will receive only 50% of the marks for the pages which fail to validate –Same if they only validate transitional –50% includes any points you’d receive for things like your HTML, style, etc. Not just for page content If your CSS does not validate you will also receive marks off (straight point value)

Second Chances For assignment 1, people who’s pages failed to validate or had broken links were given a second shot For assignment 2: –If you have broken links, when they are fixed is when the assignment is considered turned in –If the pages do not validate, only 50% of the marks for that page

Before you Submit your Assignment Upload all your pages –Validate them FROM the cmpt165 server –Add the W3C link/logo to the bottom Test to make sure every page works Every link works Pictures work

What Will We Be Looking For? You have 2 stylesheets which produce 2 very, very different looking sites Site Layout –Did you do the index.html, pictures subdirectory, etc. HTML –Proper use of markup –Proper use of units –Indentation –Identifier and classes names DO they make sense –Proper use of identifiers and classes –Proper use of and

Assignment 2 Evaluation, cont. Web site –Is it easy to tell what you’re selling –Easy to navigate –Pleasing to the eye –Good color choices –Typos, grammar, etc. –Good company name/logo choice “Sam’s auto” selling computers is a bad choice –Sufficient information about the company/the products you are selling

Evaluation, cont. CSS –Is it valid? –Is the stylesheet laid out in a logical manner? All of the related properties are together All of the related rules are together –All paragraph rules together –All rules for basic layout are together –Do you use unnecessary properties If they property doesn’t cause a chance in appearance, don’t use it -Do you use the condensed version of rules when appropriate? If you set all 4 margins, you can do this in one property

Evaluation, cont. If you use tables for layout purposes, you will fail this assignment Tables are only used for tabular data There will be more marks for creativity this time –What is creativity? Putting some effort into the site –Not doing the bare minimum black and white plain site I like the TAs to be lenient on this –Remember that people enjoy browsing not only easily navigable sites, but sites which look pleasing

Evalutation, still Color choices –You may really like black and white, but you will lose marks if you use no other colors –Should have a good reason to use a black background with white text It’s hard to read even though it’s high contrast Better solution is to use a black background as a “frame” for your page –Do not forget to set all 5 of the colors!
