The Italian Renaissance Section 2 The Big Idea New ways of thinking created a rebirth of the arts and learning in Italy. Main Ideas During the Italian Renaissance, people found new ways to see the world. Italians writers contributed great works of literature. Italian art and artists were among the finest in the world. Science and education made advances during this time

The Renaissance The word Renaissance means “rebirth.” What was being reborn during this time? A love of education & art.

The Renaissance During the Middle Ages, all of the focus was on the Church. The Renaissance revived a love for the art and learning of the ancient Greeks and Romans. Ancient Ancient Greece Rome Cicero

The Renaissance The renewed interest in learning was created because of the discovery of ancient Greek and Roman texts. Italian scholars now began to study subjects such as history, literature, public speaking, & art.

The Renaissance These subjects (history, literature, public speaking, & art) were called the humanities. People’s newfound interest in the humanities led them to respect those who could write or speak well. As a result, talented writers & artists won great fame. Dante MachiavelliMichelangeloDa Vinci

The Renaissance Artists of the Italian Renaissance were also inspired by the classical works ( the work of ancient Greeks & Romans). Inspiration was not hard to find because Roman ruins still stood in Italy & classical statues were on display throughout Italy. Italy

The Renaissance Italian artists studied the classical statues & used them as guides for their artwork. As a result, many of the human beings that Renaissance artists drew or sculpted were as perfect as Greek gods. the Greek god Apollo the Greek god Hera

“Humanism” The Greek and Roman philosophers led Renaissance thinkers to question the absolute trust for religion and the bible. Instead, Renaissance thinkers tried to balance religious faith and human knowledge.  Instead of simply explaining all events as “God’s Will,” they tried to find explanations in human knowledge. This balance of religion and knowledge was called “Humanism.”

Jesus, as seen in Michelangelo’s The Last Judgment. This just a small part of a much larger painting in the Sistine Chapel. The Sistine Chapel is a part of the Vatican -the headquarters and main church of the Pope in Rome.

The Renaissance Renaissance painters also developed new artistic techniques like perspective. Perspective is a method of showing a three- dimensional scene on a flat surface so that it looks real. Christ Handing the Keys to St. Peter by Pietro Perugino
