1 Art and the Renaissance

2 Identify the role of art in society.
Objective: Understand the main characteristics of the Renaissance and how it changed from Middle Ages Identify the role of art in society.

3 Humanism Studying topics relating to humans, their accomplishments, and their potential. Focus on history, literature, philosophy (known as the humanities).

4 Individualism Belief in unique and valuable qualities of each individual in society. Focus on the worth of each person and celebrates differences. Ex.) Appearance, personality, talents, skills.

5 Secularism Dealing with non-religious subject matter. The philosophy, literature, and art of the Renaissance began to include non-religious themes. Such as jealousy, love, revenge, and political power are examples.

6 Classicism Interest in the art and learning of the Greeks and Romans. Studying past helped shape the Renaissance view of what was important.

7 Characteristics of Renaissance Art
Religious but against Greek and Roman backgrounds Perspective: making distant objects smaller than those close to the viewer, artist could paint scenes that appeared 3-dimensional Shadowing: added roundness and an element of realism Human models: drew anatomy by using live models, making art more realistic
