Began in Italy and is seen as the beginnings of the modern world Occurred roughly between 14th century and 16th AD Marked by a revival of art, literature, and learning Recovery of classical texts and ideals Focus on Greco-Roman traditions

2 Humanism Renaissance scholars looked to the past for inspiration
They studied the classic works of ancient Greeks and Romans Humanism was a literary movement It focuses on people and not religion, studied old manuscripts, and revived interest in literature and art They thought they would understand the world better by studying the classics Emphasized human ideal instead of beliefs Focused on the individual and not religion

4 Medici’s Wealthy merchants and bankers replaced nobles in running city-states in Italy In Florence a banking family known as the Medici’s came to rule They were great patrons of the arts and commissioned artists, sculptors and architects to greatly improve Florence They changed Florence into the most beautiful city in Italy

Influenced by artistic achievements of classical Greece and Rome Art emphasized reality, attention to detail, and desire for perfection Religion with a lifelike approach Biblical events, landscapes, portraits, and scenes from everyday life Invention of perspective Greater realism and naturalism, especially in the depiction of the human body and emotions

7 Brunelleschi Brunelleschi was one of the great sculptors and architects of the early Renaissance. His most famous contribution was the design of the dome of the cathedral of Florence, which still dominates the Florentine skyline today.

10 Michelangelo Michelangelo was one of the greatest artists of the High Renaissance. At a young age his talent was spotted by Lorenzo de Medici and he was brought up in the Medici palace. He went on to create some of the most famous works of the Renaissance, carving the Pieta and painting the walls and ceilings of the Sistine Chapel.

Ghiberti beat out Brunelleschi in a competition to make the bronze doors. It took him 20 + years to complete.
