Why do we celebrate Veterans’ Day?

How do we celebrate Veterans? In Washington D.C. on the National Mall there are a number of monuments dedicated to the Veterans of wars fought by the United States. Can you identify the following monuments?

The Vietnam Memorial “The Wall”

The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier A memorial to all those soldiers who fought in foreign wars whose remains were never identified. The original memorial was dedicated to a unknown soldier from World War I. Later additional memorials were added for those soldiers who fought and died in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam.

The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is guarded 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, regardless of weather, war, or terrorists attacks. Guarding the tomb is considered one of the highest honors a soldier can receive. The “changing of the guard” is a highly ritualized event that occurs every 6 hours at the tomb. w w

Parades Parades are a common form of celebration on Veterans’ Day. Many communities throughout the United States have a parade on or around November 11 th of each year. New York City holds the largest Veterans’ Day parade in the United States.

Wreath Laying Ceremony Laying a wreath at the grave or memorial of those who fought and died in service of our country is a common way of celebrating Veterans’ Day. Many nations throughout the world use this tradition as a way of honoring their fallen.

What does it all mean? Based on what you learned today what does the quote “All gave some, some gave all” mean to you?

Veterans’ Day When celebrating our Veterans it is important to keep in mind the sacrifices made by the veterans and their families. Their service provides us with the safety and security we take for granted. Their families sacrifice more than we often realize.
