GET READY TO TAKE NOTES REMINDER: INTEGUMENTARY SYSTEM QUIZ THURS. / FRI. Wednesday, September 30, 2015

Skin & the Integumentary System

Functions of Skin 1. Maintaining homeostasis/protection (mechanical, chemical, thermal, UV, bacteria) 2. Regulate body temperature 3. Retards water loss (keratin) 4. Houses sensory receptors 5. Synthesizes various chemicals (vitamin D) 6. Excretes waste

Sebaceous glands Oil glands all over the skin Produce sebum which is a lubricant that keeps skin/hair soft and moist, also kills bacteria

Eccrine Glands Apocrine Glands Small and numerous all over the body Produce sweat Regulate body heat Large and confined mainly to axillary and genital areas Produce fatty acid & protein secretion that when bacteria use as food causes us to have body odor Sudoriferous glands (sweat glands)

YOU JUST NEED TO WRITE THE NAME DOWN AND SOMETHING SHORT ABOUT IT- YOU ARE NOT COPYING THE WHOLE SLIDE!!! CAUTION SOME OF THESE PICTURES ARE GROSS AND SOME OF THEM WILL MAKE YOU ITCH Common Skin Disorders (Infection & Allergies pg 123)

Herpes

Contact dermatitis Causes: exposure to chemicals that provoke allergic responses. Symptoms: Itching, redness, swelling, progressing to blistering Treatments: Various creams, ointments, pills

Contact dermatitis

Impetigo Cause: bacterial skin infection, very contagious Symptoms: red sores that can break open, ooze fluid, and develop a yellow- brown crust Types: mild- severe Treatment: ointment, creams, antibiotics
