LT- I explain the origins of the Gutenberg press and its contributions to the Protestant Reformation SC- I will understand and explain Martin Luther’s impact on the Protestant Reformation. Thursday, October 29

Gutenberg Press Johann Gutenberg developed the printing press with movable type. Effect of the printing press: Knowledge and religious ideas spread across Europe. Gutenberg Bible

Martin Luther German priest Initiated the Protestant Reformation Indulgences: full or partial pardon for punishment of sins which have already been forgiven. Indulgences were sold by the Catholic church Martin Luther believed that one cannot buy forgiveness for their sins from the Catholic Church

Martin Luther’s 95 Theses Martin Luther posted 95 These on Church door Goal of Martin Luther’s 95 Theses: To reform the Catholic Church by rejecting the sale of indulgences. Result = The Protestant Reformation

The Protestant Reformation Reform: to change, renovate, or restore The Protestant Reformation: An attempt to reform the Roman Catholic Church and resulted in the creation of Protestant churches Martin Luther’s 95 Theses Creates a turning point in European history because it ended religious unity in Western Europe

Causes of the Protestant Reformation Printing press helps to spread secular thought Renaissance had emphasized secularity and the individual: Church authority is challenged Rulers do not want popes to control them Popes viewed as corrupt: spending money on arts personal pleasures and wars

Causes of Protestant Reformation (Cont.) Northern merchants do not want to pay taxes to Rome Priests accused with “selling” indulgences, or prayers that promise to send the prayer to heaven

Friday, October 30 DO NOW: Look at the causes of the Reformation. List which ones are connected with Renaissance ideas AND explain why

Here’s the story- real quick Fill in the blanks as I go along 1.Martin Luther decides to take a stand against indulgences 2.Posts 95 Theses on the door of a Wittenburg church in order to get people to debate his thoughts 3.Someone prints his work 4.Luther directly challenges the pope – says he will drive him out of the Church by force 5. Pope Leo X threatens Luther with excommunication unless he takes back what he said 6.Luther refuses 7.Holy Roman Emperor Charles V summons Luther to trial in Worms 8.Luther still does not take back his statements

1.Charles V issues Edict of Worms: Luther is said to be a heretic and an outlaw 2.Prince Frederick the Wise of Saxony shelters Luther in castle 3.Luther translates New Testament into German 4.Luther comes back to Wittenburg, sees that his new ideas have taken hold 5.Some German Princes go against his new ideas – War breaks out 6.Peace of Augsburg is signed, its decided that the religion of each German state is to be decided by its own ruler

Where Luther disagreed with the Church: Church says:Luther says: You get salvation through good works and faith You get salvation by faith alone. The Pope and Church traditions inform Church teachings ONLY the Bible should influence what the church teaches, NOT THE POPE. The Bible should only be interpreted by the priests. There is a defined hierarch within the church All people of the faith are equal- people do not need priests to interpret the Bible for them!

Consequences of Martin Luther’s Actions New Religion: _________________________ New Religious Practices: -Priests wear ordinary clothes -Masses said in German, not Latin -Some ministers are allowed to get married

Create a cartoon strip of the story of the Protestant Reformation Each block needs either a caption OR conversation between characters that explain what is going on in the section
