Tees Valley Unlimited Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) Tees Valley Unlimited is the private and public sector Local Enterprise Partnership striving to deliver jobs and economic growth across the Tees Valley. Tees Valley Unlimited (TVU) Public/private partnership TVU covers the local authority areas of Darlington, Hartlepool, Middlesbrough, Redcar & Cleveland and Stockton- on- Tees. Remit to drive forward economic growth within the Tees Valley. TVU mission by 2025 is to: Increase the number of enterprises by 3,200 (25% increase) Create 25,000 new jobs (to match the national employment rate) Meet replacement demand of 120,000 jobs Increase the number of residents achieving NVQ Level 3 and Level 4

Tees Valley Unlimited Employment and Skills Team In our TVU Partnership Business Plan we’ve identified a number of objectives for the LEP to take forward and one of the most significant is to: ‘Develop the Workforce for the Tees Valley” In order to achieve this we need to: ‘Secure learning and skills provision which will meet the needs of current and future employers’

Importance of Skills Clear correlation between skills, wage levels and economic prosperity.  27% year olds NVQ4+ (35% nationally)  7.6% year olds claiming JSA (3.7% nationally)  9.4% year olds NEET (5.7% nationally) Tees Valley employers are looking for highly skilled employees - 41% of jobs advertised in the Tees Valley between May and August 2014 were for Professional and Associate Professional jobs Work readiness is just as important as skills Low skill levels restricts opportunities at individual and community levels

Key Challenges – Replacement demand – Tees Valley has an ageing workforce with highly skilled people retiring, being promoted or leaving the workforce. Advancing technologies – up-skilling and re-skilling, employers across a range of sectors are finding it difficult to recruit experienced workers with up-to-date knowledge and skills to replace those leaving their workforce. Business growth – New job opportunities due to new products under development, new business opportunities, effective supply chain partnerships and market opportunities. Lack of understanding of key employment sectors and opportunities - amongst young people, their parents, teachers and advisers, as well as adults looking for a job, promotion or progression in their career path, about the key employment sectors and the opportunities they offer.

Key Challenges cont… Need for positive promotion of the area – dispel myths /old news Need to target young people at early enough age to make a difference – clear careers information needs to be given to young people and their parents before they choose their subjects Need to engage with teachers and parents - often have an outdated view of the local economy, many link advanced manufacturing to the old ‘ICI’ days. Need to connect schools with employers - employers are keen to engage with schools to improve communications. Attitudes and behaviours – key requirement from employers

Tees Valley Skills Newsletter Sector specific news letters go out quarterly to all Learning Providers- Schools, Colleges, Universities and Work Based Leaning Providers with content on Apprenticeships, Funding, Events, Businesses and case studies of young people working in specific sectors. 21 st Century Careers in the Tees Valley 10 short videos 10 short videos – produced to increase young peoples understanding of the range of career opportunities available and the growth potential of Tee Valley’s key sectors.  Real young people doing real jobs in the Tees Valley – giving viewers insight and helping them find the right career. Sectors currently available include;  The videos are accessible through the Skills Portal or available to order FREE on disc from TVU. Tees Valley Skills Events 3rd Annual Tees Valley Skills Event is an interactive “Have a go” event open to years 10/11/12 &13. All exhibition stands this year are "have a go" activities only, allowing all attendees to participate.
