Supporting the teaching and uptake of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). How can engineers contribute to this, working with the National Science Learning Centre and National STEM Centre?

Overview of STEM education environment and support available to schools National Science Learning Centre, Project ENTHUSE, the Network of Science Learning Centres & Partnerships, and the National STEM Centre How can IMechE volunteers support? Next steps Agenda

STEM education, support available to schools STEM regarded as key to rebalancing economy and securing long-term economic growth STEM is an international issue – UK leading the way in providing an infrastructure of support; National Science Learning Centre, and network of regional Science Learning Centres & Partnerships; National STEM Centre; STEM Ambassadors; CREST Awards Big Bang Fair/National Science & Engineering Week; Primary Engineer, Engineering Education Scheme

National Science Learning Centre Leading provider in subject-specific CPD in science and other closely related subjects Project ENTHUSE Supporting teachers’ participation in CPD, in partnership with DfE, Wellcome Trust, BP, BAE Systems, Rolls-Royce, IMechE National STEM Centre Online and physical library

The National Science Learning Centre provides Engineering and Technology CPD that: -Enhances the ‘real world’ knowledge of teachers -Provides an industrial context for the curriculum -Inspires pupils by providing them with teachers who can deliver a more relevant and exciting curriculum.

What is outstanding subject specific CPD? Updates, and develop further, teacher subject knowledge, understanding of STEM careers, and ‘where STEM can lead’ for young people. Reinvigorate and enthuse teachers – often reigniting a passion for the subject Support excellent STEM teaching across all phases, primary, secondary and post-16

What is outstanding subject specific CPD? Ultimately: -better outcomes for young people -more students achieving better in STEM

What prevents teachers from receiving outstanding CPD? -The financial cost of leaving the classroom -The support from leadership within school -Perceived relevance of CPD to subject -Exam and time pressures -Schools’ over reliance on internal CPD

How can IMechE volunteers support? We want to use the IMechE’s support of Project ENTHUSE to develop new ways of utilising the skills and expertise of engineers, to add real value to teachers’ professional development experiences in STEM, so benefitting the young people they teach.

Opportunities to engage Teacher Industrial Partners’ Scheme Guest presenters on courses Workplace tours / Inspirational CPD venues Case studies of existing industrial links Resources (Videos, interviews, posters, etc) Hosting webinars Careers events for students What ideas do you have?

How can IMechE volunteers support? 1.How might this differ from previous volunteer activity? 2.How might outcomes and expectations be different? 3.What would you need from us to help you? 4.How could it benefit you?

Next Steps Further develop actions plans for Science Learning Centres, National STEM Centre and other STEM support Create community group – E.g. on National STEM Centre website – to share plans and further ideas Post specific opportunities on community group regularly. Communicate successes and forward plans regularly via community group.

Progress is being made… But more needs to be done.
