SOCCER FÚTBOL

HISTORY Played by many ancient cultures: Romans (early Olympics), Japanese (1004 B.C.), & Chinese (611 A.D.). England: Outlawed for being “vulgar and indecent” until officially sanctioned in 1861. England: Grew in popularity by the 1800s, annual contests held in northern and middle England.

HISTORY CONT. Eton College has the earliest known rules of Soccer in 1815. Later, standardized rules known as the “Cambridge Rules” were adopted by England’s major colleges. Today, Soccer is the most watched single sports event in the world’s history (8 billion people). More than the Olympics and bigger than baseball, football, and basketball combined.

OBJECT OF SOCCER The object of the game is to score more goals than the other team. The best way to score is to use teamwork and pass the ball around to your teammates. Don’t just kick the ball as hard as you can, look around for another teammate who is in a better position and pass the ball to them.

RULES Each team has 11 players-including a goalie. Hand Ball (No Hands): do not use any part of the body from the tips of the fingers to the shoulders. The player cannot handle the ball but the ball can hit the player. Ball to Hand (Legal) Hand to Ball (Illegal) Equipment: Jersey or shirt, shorts, stockings (socks), shin guards, and footwear.

RULES CONT. Start & Restart. A kick-off is the way a soccer game is started and restarted. *The ball is placed at the center of the field. *All players must be on their own sides. *Other team must be at least 10 yards away. *At whistle, ball is in play when it is kicked and moves forward. Kick-off: At the start of the game. After a goal has been scored. At the start of the half.

RULES CONT. A throw-in is taken when the ball crosses the Side/Touch Line and leaves the field. WHEN THE BALL IS THROWN: *Both feet must be on the ground. *Both hands must be over the head. A corner kick or goal kick is taken when the ball leaves the field across the Goal Line.

RULES CONT. Corner Kick: If the Defense kicks the ball past the Goal Line, the other team takes a kick from the nearest corner to restart the game. Goal Kick: If the Offense kicks the ball past the Goal Line, any opposing player may kick from anywhere inside the “goalie box” or “goal area” to restart the game.

RULES CONT. Penalty Kick: Contact foul or hand ball (hands) by Defense in Penalty Area. Ball placed on Penalty Spot. Goalie with both feet on Goal Line. All other players outside penalty area until ball is kicked. If shot is missed, ball is still live. Two-touch Rule: A player cannot touch the ball twice in a row when putting the ball in play. Also applies to all throw-ins.

PENALTIES Yellow Card: Warning if player regularly breaks rules, does not respect the referee’s decision, delay the start of play, argumentative, show unsportsmanlike conduct. Red Card: Expelled for committing a serious foul, being violent, using offensive or insulting language, or receiving a second yellow card during game.

POSITIONS (11) Offense (5): 2 Strikers 1 Attacking Midfielder 2 Midfielders (Left & Right) Defense (6): 1 Defensive Midfielder 2 Backs (Left & Right) 1 Stopper 1 Sweeper 1 Goalie

SKILLS Passing: when a player kicks the ball to a teammate; used to move the ball closer to the opposing goal, to keep the ball away from an opponent, or to give the ball to a player who is in a better position to score. Dribbling: the basic skill of advancing the ball with the feet while controlling it. Trapping: when a player uses his body to slow down and control a moving ball, most often using his chest, thighs, or feet. Shooting: when a player kicks the ball at the opponent's net in an attempt to score a goal.
