Importance and Contribution of the Agriculture Sector Pakistan is the world’s 5th largest producer of milk, 4th largest producer of cotton, 5th largest sugarcane producer, 8th largest producer of wheat and exporter of surplus rice, mangoes, other fruits and many vegetables as well as horticulture products. More than 55 percent of total export earnings come from export of agro-based raw and processed products In 2014, the composition of agricultural GDP was 41 percent from crops, 56 percent from livestock and the remaining 3 percent from fisheries and forestry sub-sectors.

How to Improve the Agricultural Sector? Pakistan needs to change its policy-orientation from the current practice of focusing exclusively on price and move towards yield enhancement and address structural issues Enhanced research Agriculture as a means to reduce poverty

CROPS Important crops: Wheat and Rice Sugarcane Maize Cotton The above mentioned crops account for 25.6 percent of the value added in overall agriculture and 5.3 percent of GDP

Exports and Imports Exports Pakistan’s export concentrated in: cotton, leather, rice, synthetic textiles and sports goods Overall exports recorded a decline of 4.9 percent during the year However, there is still room for more expansion in exportation This can be done by export diversification

Imports Imports during the year grew by 1.59 percent and stands at $ billion no import of wheat during the current year Increase in imports of tea, sugar, spices, pulses and soybean oil Decrease in import of palm oil.

Livestock Includes the farming of cows, buffalos and goats which provide milk, meat, hides and other raw materials for the local as well as international market. The major problem for small holding dairy farmers is the dismal milk productivity of Pakistani cattle and buffalos

Agricultural Co-operatives Existing legislation in Pakistan allow formation of farmer cooperative bodies, which can buy input, sell produce and obtain credit from commercial banks for members. Unfortunately, these co-operatives has not made much progress and many could not continue for a long period. Various reasons contributing towards lack of interest in co- operatives : Lack of education and guidance Lack of awareness Mistrust Conflicts between members

Future of Co-operatives PADFA plans to launch the “ Pakistan Co-operative Renaissance” by 2016 to increase awareness, provide education and training to small landholders to ignite their interest in Cooperatives. Train managers specifically for managing co-operative farms. The Turkish model could also be molded for our purposes in Pakistan. The establishment of an international collaboration platform for co-operative sector of OIC member countries will In Sha Allah aid us in carrying out this project.
