PIP FY15 Q4 Report W. Pellico PIP PMG November 5 th 2015

Proton Improvement Plan Goals and Scope (Established in 2011) Increase the beam repetition rate from the present ~7.5 Hz to 15 Hz –Need at least 9 Hz for NOvA 12-batch slip-stacking –Requires RF cavities refurbishment, RF Systems –Eliminate major reliability vulnerabilities and maintain reliability at present levels (>85%) at the full repetition rate Eliminate major obsolescence issues Increase the proton source throughput, with a goal of reaching >2E17 protons/hour –Presently operating at <1E17 protons/hour Ensure a useful operating life of the proton source through at least 2025 (now extended to 2030 to accommodate PIP-II schedule) 11/5/2015PIP FY15 Q4 PMG

Completed PIP – Task Structure and Status (as shown in last quarter PMG) PIP has 33 Tasks (New Cavity being split) 18 are completed and closed 2 more tasks will be closed in FY15 Completion of all cavities likely into early FY16 Alignment with PIP-II

PIP FY15 Q4 PMG Activities (Overall much progress has been made – however shutdown activities and some hardware issues delayed task) 28 cell design effort (~95%) –A total of 35 cells were fully assembled, tested and 28 of them were selected and installed in the fully assembled modulator cabinet this quarter. –Issues with vendor charging supply delayed work for 5 weeks. –Changes were made to the operating voltage to make more reliable. –Preliminary testing of 28 cell revealed the need to modify the existing voltage regulation Waveform Feed forward/learning (~85%) –Completed feed forward & learning on ramp section –Completed feed forward on beam step - unable to complete beam learning on multiple length beams –Unable to test Feedback with present setup Components for 54 cells have arrived (100%) –Cabinet for the 54 cell is being design (~75%) –Designed with windows can absorb spark energy –Will use the 28 cell controls relay rack/ charging supply to run the 54 cell design at reduced rep rate PIP 200 MHz RF Power Systems (WBS 1.1.1) Linac Modulator 11/5/2015

PIP 200 MHz RF Power Systems (WBS 1.1.1) Linac Modulator - continue Work continues on the buildup of the 28 and 54 cell Linac modulators 28 cell is for station 1 is near completion and ready for install this month Electrical work at LRF 1 has been completed and waiting for modulator Being moved this week PIP FY15 Q4 PMG Marx Modulator Controls Rack 11/5/2015 Marx Modulator Cabinet 28 Cells and hardware

The Critical Device Control module and the Laser Notcher Safety Interface Chassis (LNSIC) for the Laser Notcher was designed, built, and installed. LNSIC has been integrated into the Laser Lab Safety system and is currently in use. The optical box and its alignment fixtures and safety switches have been installed on the Laser Notcher electronics rack. The chiller and manifold were designed, installed and implemented for the operation of the Grumman free space amplifiers. The major issue for the 4th quarter has been the fiber connection between the CW PriTel power fiber amp with an average power of 2W and the pulsed Optical Engines fiber amplifier. Damage to the fiber has resulted on multiple occasions. Two options have been identified to reduce power density at the connection points – these are both being pursued. Booster Anode Supplies WBS – Completed!! Anodes supplies for the Booster RF –A lot of effort to finish this system Labor from Controls, EE support, RF, MS and PS departments Lots of gallery work –Pulled high power cables to all 20 modulators Slight modification to modulators to accommodate new cables –New PLC controls located in the galleries rack control centers –Upgraded cooling Larger volume required cooling skids Chilled water required for blower units inside anodes –Testing went very smoothly –Some systems could not be fully tested until installed and fully powered (a risk) –Some small issues found during install/testing of east anode (west went faster) Big thanks to EE support – Ryan Crawford & Matt Kufer PIP FY15 Q4 PMG11/5/2015

Booster RF Cavities (Three Separate WBS Tasks) PIP FY15 Q4 PMG11/5/2015 –Main RF Cavities Additional cavities 21 & 22 Just started retrofit of two large bore cavities –Replacement Cavities Assigned to Tom Kroc Continued work on cavity model (TD and AD) Released specification document Compatible with PIP-II+ requirements –Internal lab review completed –Harmonic Cavity Design near completion Working on mechanical issues Finalizing ceramic window design Finalizing coupler/matching Verifying cooling options –Building test cavity Better measurements of garnet and cavity Q Measurements of mode damping technique

Booster Harmonic (perpendicular) Cavity WBS Continued mechanical modeling and design (Review in Feb) –Cooling seems to be adequate –Amplifier has been ordered –Mechanical engineering design underway –Working on ceramic window design Placement Voltage/vacuum requirements PIP FY15 Q4 PMG11/5/2015 View of cavity window placement

Workshop on Booster Performance and Enhancements The Fermilab Proton Improvement Plan (PIP) is organizing a day and half workshop at Fermilab on November The workshop is to bring together a group of people to discuss the challenges that FNAL Booster will potential face by doubling its flux from 1.2E17 pph to 2.3E17 pph. Furthermore, the workshop will also encourage discussion about PIP II Booster era and an eventual new RCS. Participation is open to those interested or have experience in relation to these topics. Presentations are also welcomed within the constraints of the limited time allotted to the workshop. Once we have a complete list of participants and talks a more detailed list of talks and speakers will be provide.
