Parent SOL and Internet Guide

The Internet is an amazing educational tool. There are an incredible amount of SOL remediation websites that you can use to help your child succeed. But first, let’s talk about the dangers that you as a parent need to be aware of…

These are tips compiled from the National Cyber Security Alliance's StaySafeOnline, GetNetWise, NetSmartz Workshop, Microsoft, National Center for Missing and Exploited Children's CyberTipline and SafeTeens. Keep your computer in a central and accessible location in your home. Use the Internet with your children. Teach your children never to give out personal information (name, address, phone number, school, hometown) to people they meet online in chat rooms or on bulletin boards. Know who your children's online friends are and oversee their chat areas. If your children use chat or , advise them not to meet in person with anyone they first "met" online. Talk to children about not responding to offensive or dangerous . Do not delete the offensive or dangerous ; turn off the monitor, and contact local law enforcement. Talk to children about what to do if they see something that makes them feel scared, uncomfortable or confused. If you suspect online "stalking" or sexual exploitation of a child, report it to your local law- enforcement agency. Internet accounts should be in the parent's name with parents having the primary screen name. You may be able to set some parental controls within your browser. Internet Explorer allows you to restrict or allow certain Web sites to be viewed on your computer, and you can protect these settings with a password. To find those options, click "Tools" on your menu bar, select "Internet Options," choose the "Content" tab, and click the "Enable" button under "Content Advisor."

It is important that parents familiarize themselves with the requirements of the Virginia Standards of Learning tests and know how they can help their child prepare for the tests at home. First, it is essential that you as a parent understand the Standards of Learning (SOLs) your child is expected to know by grade level and by subject area. The Virginia Department of Education website can help…

The Standards of Learning for Virginia Public Schools describe the state’s expectations for student learning and achievement in grades K-12 in English, Mathematics, Science, History and Social Science, Technology, the Fine Arts, Foreign Language, Health and Physical Education, and Driver Education. Use this site to find out what your child is expected to know at a given grade level and subject. After you know what your child needs to learn, then you can help them prepare for the test at home by using the many websites available on the internet for practice.

Now let’s look at a few of the available SOL remediation websites…

Thank you!
