2 What is Cyber Safety?  Cybersafety is the safe and responsible use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). For more information please visit http://cyber-safety.comhttp://cyber-safety.com What is Digital Citizenship?  Digital citizenship is a concept focused around educating and informing parents students, teachers, and technology leaders about the appropriate uses of technology. 3  Always keep the computer in a central place of the home where you can check what’s on the screen periodically.  Children should never have a computer, especially with a web cam in their room.  Ask your children to acquaint you with their online friends and email contacts.  Talk to your children about communication with strangers and to never give out their name, address, or telephone number and to never agree to meet someone in person.  Consider using a filtering software, like SafeSurf, to provide you with the flexibility to set levels of content access according to your own personal standards.

5 Lead by example. Children learn more from what we do than what we say. Model good behaviour. Learn to disconnect, turn your cell phone off at dinner Know what your kids are doing online. Pay attention to where they are visiting. Share your values. Talk about important issues such as cheating, lying, being cruel as those rules apply to online activity too! Establish limits for phone use, video and download times and internet destinations. Encourage children to lead balanced lives and step away from the screen. Engage in outdoor activities, reading, or other hobbies. Make children accountable for their actions and let them know about the consequences if they abuse their privileges. Tell children what’s at stake. Warn them of internet dangers that are often irreversible.

6 Treat others how you want to be treated. Avoid name calling, gossip and negative talk Keep your messages and posts positive and truthful Double check your messages and think before you send. Be conscientious of the impact your message will have on others. Keep your friends secrets. News can go viral online so be cautious of what you don’t want repeated. Avoid digital drama. Don’t get caught up in chat gossip. Cyber bullying is absolutely not allowed. If targeted by a cyber bully, don’t respond. If problem persists, tell an adult. Use appropriate language and emoticons. Avoid use of all caps as it’s considered shouting online. Avoid the use of foul language.
