When we compare two things or people we look at what makes them different from each other. TALL / SHORT The woman is shorter than the man. The man is taller than the woman.

FASTSLOW The red car is faster than the white car. The white car is slower than the red car. This car is the slowest.

The black dog is much bigger than the white dog.

Adjectives with one or two syllables add –er at the end of the word. TALL TALLER YOUNG YOUNGER SHORT SHORTER OLD OLDER STRONG STRONGER HIGH HIGHER I’m older than you

If the adjective has one syllable and ends in only one consonant preceded by only one vowel, we double the consonant. Big bigger Fat fatter Wet wetter Elephants are bigger than lions. Hippos are fatter than snakes. Fall is wetter than summer.

Adjectives ending in y preceded by a consonant, change y for i and add -er Crazy crazier Lazy lazier Happy happier Sheila is crazier than Paula. Carlos is lazier than me. You are happier than your brother.

Adjectives with more than two syllables write the word more before the adjective. Attractive more attractive Intelligent more intelligent Dangerous more dangerous Your sister is more attractive than that girl. Pablo is more intelligent than me. Driving is more dangerous than walking.

There are some irregular adjectives Good better Bad worse Little less Much/many more My father’s car is better than yours. Their house is worse than ours.

THAN Is always used after the comparative.

THE SUPERLATIVE The superlative of an adjective or adverb is the greatest form of adjective or adverb which indicates that something has some feature to a greater degree than anything it is being compared to.adjectiveadverb Mount Everest is the highest mountain in the world.

AFIRMATIVE: AS + adjective + AS This book is as interesting as that magazine. Buenos Aires is as expensive as Tokyo NEGATIVE : NOT AS + adjective + AS This flat is not as big as that house. Paris is not as expensive as Tokyo Difference can also be shown:

INFERIORITY: We use less before the adjective: My watch is less expensive than yours. Your neighbour is less intelligent than than you. The superlative is formed using the least before the adjective. La Rioja is the least expensive province in Spain
